My wife and I are going to spend next week end in Atlanta to discover the city and mostly the suburbs as we want out of Illinois and Atlanta seems like a nice pick.

I was told to look into Alpharetta, Marietta, St John so we will go there to visit and see some open houses.

Anything we should absolutely check I downtown Atl?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

As far as tourist attractions downtown, the top are the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola and the College Football Hall of Fame. They are all within walking distance of one another.

If you mean the weekend of April 27-28, the Mitty historic car races will be going on at Road Atlanta (in Braselton, to the northeast of the metro area) and on Sunday morning a car show called Caffeine & Exotics will take place in Sandy Springs, on the north side of town.

Thanks! The World of Coca Cola sounds interesting. We will go to the Caffeine Exotics as Sandy Springs is one of the suburbs we want to check.

Where are you staying? We can also recommend things close to you for dining.

Living in the Atlanta suburbs has a lot to do with traffic management so where will you be working?

Also schools for kids is big if not going private.

Thanks Mitch. I will try to go for a couple of hours to Road Atlanta. Would love to go check ***************** and Ferrari of Atlanta but that would be too much car stuff for my wife :). Hopefully, when we move to the area, i will have plenty of time to go check them out.

    Hi Chris,

I can work from home - which is what i do at the moment but we have an office about 35 miles from my house. I go there maybe twice a week. If we move to GA, i most likely will work from home also as most of the team will remain in IL.

The suburbs i have read about are Alpharetta, Sandy Springs and John Creeks which apparently have great school. We are looking for a mix of great school, some sort of social life and to stay under $650k price for a 4br. We live in Naperville at the moment which would be a great place to stay as the downtown is pretty busy, they have event every week end, many restaurants, the schools are very highly rated nationwide, it's safe and you can get a decent house for $600k but we are done with the winter (we had snow last Monday), and the property taxes that only go up every year (Roughly 3,5% of the market price). Chicago itself is no longer attractive as it's always congested, violent and expensive. Plus the landscape is flat and boring so we are really done :).

My wife and I live in Cumming, north of Alpharetta. A bit less traffic than Alpharetta although that seems to be changing with lots of new construction. The high schools near me (South Forsyth and Lambert) are excellent schools. If you want to see what 600k buys you are more than welcome to stop by our house, I work from home and am almost always here. I moved here about 15 years ago and it was a great place to raise our daughter (I used to live in Bolingbrook in the early 90's, best thing I ever did was leave).

Alpharetta / Milton are great areas. Great roads, good school options, and you’ll get a fair amount for your money. Some areas are walk/bike to restaurants now which is really nice. We’re in south Alpharetta/Roswell on the Chattahoochee River to through another good area in the search.

My wife’s family is from Chicago and her sister/husband/2 boys live downtown by Navy Pier. We were up there in January when you set the record for like -7372828311 degrees and we couldn’t imagine living there. (This from a guy who lived in Iceland for a while.). Live Chicago during the day in the summer though, tons to do.

    Good luck!

I live a bit north of there, but am in the area multiple times a week for work, plus my parents live in Marietta. You won't completely get away from the traffic in those areas, but definitely better than Chicago. I would suggest visiting Kennestone Mountain in Marietta if you are into nature/southern history, you will be less than 2 hours from Ruby Falls/Lookout Mountain here in N.Ga/Chattanooga. Road Atlanta, AMS and Talladega speedway are all reasonably close...Atlanta is filled with stuff to do, hard to pick one thing when you are visiting for a few days but once you get here it's completely your fault if you get bored :D.

My daughter just moved from IL. and also works from home. Got rid of 2 lead weights, her husband & the "Land of Lincoln". Now called "Gimme gimme more your money". She moved to Fl. & now enjoys a moderate inc. in salary, & no more Socialist Values. The State of Georgia has much to offer & great for educating children & awarding your family a healthy life style. You must check out Ferrari of Altanta! Good luck!

Don’t completely rule out the south side. Newnan, Peachtree City and Fayetteville all have good schools, reasonably priced housing and at least at the moment, less traffic to contend with. Access to the airport and downtown is fairly simple. And there’s a good deal of great backroads for driving. Only possible drawback is that it’s not quite as cosmopolitan as the north side. At least worth a look to see if it fits your lifestyle.

I've lived in east Cobb for 22 years and still like it a great deal. You can go west to I-75 or east to GA-400 and then go places. There is plenty of green space along with ample dining and shopping options, and many of the schools are very good. A lot of new homes have been built in the recent past in the $400,000 to $1 million range and more are still going up. It I want to go downtown, the arts center or the airport I drive to Dunwoody - and the back-roads option to I-285 works quite well - and take the MARTA train. It's a fairly short drive to the great roads in the mountains, and Chattanooga, a delightful town in its own right, is a 90-minute drive.

For the most part, I've always felt that the best area inside the perimeter begins at the Brookwood interchange, where I-75 and I-85 split up north of downtown. Most of the area defined by I-75, I-85 and I-285 is desirable, and this is anchored by Buckhead, which is centered along Peachtree Road between about Wesley Road and Wieuca Road. I would add the Vinings area, which is west of I-75 and east of I-285. A drive along Mount Paran Road will be eye-opening!

I've always thought of Decatur more as a place to visit rather than to live, but I don't have enough experience on that side of town to make a judgment. I was told that it's a good place for Indian restaurants!

Hi Andrew, just my .02 but we have been in Woodstock, GA in Cherokee county and we absolutely LOVE it there. Very low crime if any, some of the best public schools in the state, lots of house for the $ and it is really beautiful up there. Also have some great roads that are kept up very well.

Thank you for the offer! Cummings looks very nice but it's a bit too far from the city. My wife will eventually need to find a job (She is a Licensed Pro Counselor at the moment) and it seems most clinics operate closer to the city. By the way, i love Rosso Fiorano!! It will be on my priority list of colors when i shop for a 360 after we get the hell out of Illinois..

Yes, we are going to stop by E Cobb too, i thought it would be out of our price range though (4br, 2500Sf and new construction) but it seems there are some things popping up.
22 years - i am sure it is very different now compared to then!! At least the towns are growing vs slowly dying as here in Illinois!
