Purchased a 97 355 Spider to Bunk with the 430. Anyone have a Transportation Company to Recommend? -OR- Its 355 miles, safer to Fly there & Drive it? Looking for Advice House to House is Amazingly 355 miles Wisconsin to Michigan
Others will disagree but I would not drive it that far until you get to know the car. The issue is, if it breaks down on the trip, you are not going to be able to take it to some local corner shop for repair. If you want to drive it, contact AAA and get a tow policy that will flat bed you home if something goes wrong.
355 miles isn't a great distance. I would ask around for a recommendation of a local hauler with an enclosed trailer. It will probably be faster and less expensive than the majors. Many independent shops offer this service.
I used Select One and was very happy: Jay Colunga Operations/Customer Service 888 West Big Beaver Rd Suite 350 Troy, MI 48083 248-972-8605- Direct 734-413-8858- Fax www.select1.com [email protected]
Congratulations! Where are you in MI? As for shipping, I wouldn't drive the car. I'm a fan of keeping the miles off them and if anything goes wrong, as Dave said, you can't just take it to the local shop. I would go with a well known enclosed shipper.
Looking Like I'll be working all Weekend, so now leaning towards a Shipper. Sent an email to Select 1 Thanks for the Suggestions Everyone. Pic of the New Ride, Cause Every Thread is Better with Pics Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice ride! Congrats..... What's she have for miles? Its still going to be 2 months before I can get out on the roads here
Definitely drive it. I was looking at a 60s Vette in Scottsdale yesterday. If i had closed I would have definitely drove it back to LA. If you break down that is what AAA and motels are for.
Definitely drive.... You are not going to be sat in old age thinking I wish I hadn’t put so many miles on my Ferrari!
I’d ship as well and hold off on distance until you know the car as stated above. Congrats. I still will watch clips of The Rock just for the 355
I always have that fantasy of flying in and driving across country when I buy cars out of state, sounds like an awesome time. Road trip!!! Then as the date draws near my brain takes over and the what-if’s dominate my thoughts. Then when the transporter arrives with me car I realize the satisfaction of that huge rig coming to my house, the anticipation as the door lowers, neighbors gathering like they have a right to know... but keeping a polite distance, and the first sound as it starts up and echos in the truck excites my senses to the point I realize I made the right choice in shipping it. A lot of “Drive it” advice from people who haven’t done it themselves. Any older Ferrari, particularly a 355, can’t be relied upon to be trouble free from day one. It only takes a minor glitch to leave you stranded so why risk souring your ownership experience? Either way, congratulations and enjoy.
If something goes wrong on the drive back, it would have gone wrong on one of your first of local drives at home instead. So the risk/reward: If you ship the car you guarantee missing the memory and connection with the car if a failure is lurking in the shadows you still have to pay for it if a failure docks the ability to drive, it'll be easier logistically to manage (but not a massive advantage, frankly) If you drive the car you risk being stranded you would be stranded at most 350 miles from home, but still close to easy AAA pickup and ability to get home - may just be a longer day than anticipated you could have a gorgeous day and a flawless drive in your new Ferrari It's a no-brainer to drive from perspective. You have minimal exposure in terms of loss (time, money) given your proximity to home and a lot to gain by enjoying a very special new car. I just drove my older 911 Turbo to Florida from Philadelphia in December. We stopped in Charleston for the night and my ABS unit died as we arrived. Ended up shipping the car home and flew back the next morning - had my Porsche whisperer fix it up and hit the road again the next weekend. Enjoyed the car in FL all season. Would have missed a lot of euphoric feelings this winter if I was scared of a machine! -Joe
I bought a 20' trailer for my 612. Not very expensive (<$5K) and spent a few hours "fixing up" the interior. That way, I have all the freedom to avoid freeway miles and enjoy the back roads. I am sure the 355 will take up less room. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I recently bought my F430 in LA and was trying to decide between driving it or shipping it to our new place in Vegas. Ended up driving with my son in my M4 from Seattle down Highway 1/101 - total blast. Not too much traffic in March. Did some sketchy passing but not too much! Picked up the 430 in Newport Beach, and promptly drove it to the Angeles Crest Highway and ripped up and down the twisties and then drove it over to our new home in Las Vegas. Way more fun that shipping it. Plus it was an awesome father/son road trip. The advantage I guess we had, is that we had a back up vehicle if it broke down. I say drive it! Life's too short.
When i picked my 348 up it was only about 150 miles, so only 1/2 the ops distance on the hottest day of the year in the uk so mid 30s. Didnt miss a beat and was great fun. Was no question as to drive or trailer. If it broke down, thats what i have recover for and besides at what point are you going to decide your new car can do a few hundred miles? These types of cars are for driving and if it cant handle a few hundred miles you bought a pup, and best to find that out sooner rather than later fir any potential warranty/good will from the garage.
That looks awesome. Who is the manufacturer of your car trailer? And how do you get the Ferrari labels? Thanks.
The trailer is from Diamond Cargo in South Georgia. They have a lot of competition and I'm sure there many other brands that will do. The "decorating" is from my work and ebay. The vents are necessary and came from WWW.Etrailer.com I pull it with a Ford Expedition EL with the ecoboost V-6.
