Speaking of buildings downtown: What's with this new trend in the financial district where they are now redoing many of the lobbies to turn them into glass palaces? UBS Tower was one of the first built that way, then there was Deloitte. Now it seems all the older buildings need their own glass entrance.

The state of Illinois had tried to sell the building and since it is not on the historic register can be torn down if the developer so desires. The building is in pretty bad shape but I hope it gets restored and not torn down. We will see. Alot of people from out of town always like that building and are surprised to hear it might get demolished.

Around the time of the opening of the Thompson Building (then known as the "State of Illinois Building") I attended a luncheon meeting of the American Institute of Architects. At my table were several very well known and highly respected architects. When our conversation got around to the Thompson Building one of them made a comment that has stuck with me. I can't remember which one of them it was, but he said, "You can mark my words, that building will either be demolished or radically reconfigured before its 40 years old." At the time I just dismissed it as a "sour grapes" comment, as lots of Chicago architects were jealous of "Baron Von Hightech" Helmut Jahn, but right now it looks like he might have been right.

I've seen it. (Thompson)... yes in bad shape.

It's all single glazed curved glass, Very hot in summer and very, very cold in winter. Plus incredibly expensive to heat and cool. How o you solve that?

Chicago early mansions. It is sickening how many were torn down, mainly on the south side and near south side south of Roosevelt Road. Rows of them were leveled from the 1950's -1980's, some of the best looking. The same thing is still happening in Detroit now as their downtown has not fully recovered yet but is showing good signs.

Studio Gang does nice work also. Maybe one of the other terminals will be by Calatrava.

Here is another Studio Gang building, Vista wich is pretty much topped out. Very slow glass installation. Every floor is at a different angle and a different color of blue green glass.

This morning trucks arrived at the big round hole between North and Navy pier. First time in years and a sign of change to come.

O'Hare needs a workover. The airport looks totally dated compared to other big airports in the US and abroad.
