I purchased a 2012 458 and the authorized Ferrari dealer is offering a 5 yr wheel/tire warranty for $2,942. Has anyone purchased such warranty and is it legit? Are the wheels on the 458 really that prone to cracking/breaking on rough roads? Comments please.

Would a certified Ferrari dealer really offer a scam warranty?

My AD never offers me anything like this. However, every time I go to BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, ETC. they always ask. It's not a scam but it's not far from it. It's gonna be a waste if you ask.

For example, if the wheel scratch is light, it's cheap to repair. If it's bend, you need to replace it which they won't warranty it. For $3k after tax, you can repair lots of tires and wheels on your 458.

It is like other forms of insurance - you have coverage in case you need it. I have it for my 488 and it is okay with me.

I wasted my $ on one once. I got 1 tire replaced when under warranty after picking up a nail. This is one where the costs for wheels and tires just isn't that awful as opposed to say an engine or trans, etc.

Find a good Alloy wheel repair specialist, for $100 they can make a curbed rim look brand new. If you puncture a tire, you understand you'll have to replace both tires i.e. right and left front? Is the warranty going to cover both tires or just the damaged one?

I always refuse all extended warranties except the wheel/tire. Reason: our roads in Michigan have been certified (don't ask me by whom) to be the worst in the US. The manager at Discount Tire knows me by first name.

In addition to finding out what road hazards are covered and if depreciation is considered bases on tire miles/use. You also need to take into consideration the cost of 4 wheels and tires, as well as the cost of 2 tires. What is the likelyhood of either occurring in 5 years based on your expected miles in your normal use area to occure? Then decide if it is worth the $3k “insurance premium”. If your useage/miles per year is very low like most Ferrari’s it s not likely worth the cost. Conversely if it is your DD and live in an area of poorly maintained roads, it may well worth while. There is no one answer for all folks. Especially since some folks are more risk adverse than others. My personal analysis for myself is that it is not worth it and that comes from a background of over 40 years in the insurance business. But no real correct answer IMO.

I declined it but was offered it from my dealer. I was offered glass too. I figured I'll self insure this one.

Insurance is a transfer of risk from one party to another, it has value, but it's not obvious until the insured against risk occurs. The warranties we receive with our cars are, in effect, insurance. The cost of covering the warrantied items is priced into the cost of the cars, manufacturers can spread their risk to all buyers, thereby keeping costs reasonable because all buyers become part of the pool. Obviously manufacturers want to keep costs low because of competitive forces, so they don't "insure" everything on the car. In particular, they don't normally cover items subject to wear or damage (except damage occurring because of a design or manufacturing defect), so other entities step in to offer coverage, normally a 3rd party, but sometimes the manufacturer, at an additional cost. The wheels and tires are in this category, but unfortunately most buyers forego coverage and this keeps the "pool" of insureds small and increases the cost for those in the pool. The price being quoted is a result of this smaller pool of insureds.

In the end, only you can decide if transferring the obvious risk is worth the cost. In deciding, you might consider anticipated driving miles, road conditions in your area (potholes, etc.), your driving habits, and any personal financial concerns. If you drive the miles and I do, it might be, but if you've got a garage queen, then might be a waste of money.

  15. 2 punctured tires and a bent wheels and the insurance has paid for itself.

I would never pay that for tires and rims, but it depends on how risk adverse you are. Obviously whatever makes you sleep better at night, but I am 50 years old have had over 10 high end cars and never in any of those cars have I needed to replace tires for other than being old and worn. Good luck either way
