Hi, I'm considering the purchase of my first Ferrari, an '86 328 GTS. I'm attracted to the iconic shape, relative reliability, manual transmission and analog nature. It has ~29k miles and recent service records, including a major. It had the minor service each of the last few years despite being driven ~500 mi per year during that period by the current owner. PPI yielded nothing of concern. Compression test showed 155-160 on every cylinder. I know that consistency is key, but are those values reasonable? Thanks!
Did you test the compression with wide open throttle (WOT) and did you test it with oil in the cylinder (wet) or dry? Technically those numbers aren’t too bad.
Is this the car you're looking at: https://sanfranciscosportscars.com/vehicles/784/1986-ferrari-328-gts If so, it looks like a really nice vehicle, and well cared for judging by the photos. I'm sure you realize it has aftermarket wheels, but if you like them that's fine. I'm guessing the car has had some work done to it in the past (the rear indicators and tail lights were re-installed in the wrong holes), but overall it looks great. Engine bay looks very correct as well, and if it's really been owned by the same guy for 13 years, then it's obviously a keeper.
Good numbers ! Buy it. Rifledriver has one and if he said buy it, then you should buy it. I have one too, by the way.
Yes, that’s the one. I did notice the wheels. I like them. How can tell about the tail lights? I’m think I’m going to proceed.
That’s a nice set of HRE 505 wheels, they are rare and hard to find now, it’s a plus if the owner has the original wheels too.
It looks like a pretty good car. It came from the Monterey area. Its windshield washer bottle is missing. I'd try to get it or get one in the deal. It looks like it has had a carpet kit installed. No jack kit in the photos and those have gotten to be expensive so I'd try and get them to supply one of those. The right wiper arm is missing. Get one of those. Thats a safety issue and they really cannot refuse to get and install one. Someone has painted the front grill black and I bet the air box has been redone too. If the stock wheels are available it would behoove you in the long run to get them even if it costs extra. I would be curious when the time comes what dealer it was originally sold from and what the original owners name is. Both will be in the front of the warranty book shown on the left side of the picture of the books. I worked in the area for years and may have history with the car. Looks like a nice example of a very early 328.
I noticed the missing washer bottle as well, but it looks like a previous owner converted to the later windshield washer version that's hidden under the spare tire shroud. It looks like he has the jack kit sitting in the spare wheel, but it's missing its original bag. The other thing that appears to be missing is the black leather cover for the roof panel.
It looks to me like there is no water bottle, only a rubber plug filling the hole. Not an NLA bottle/pump/bracket combo. It also looks to me like there is an unknown object wrapped in a towel and not a $1000 + jack bag. If a dealer wants to sell cars for collectors item prices they need to supply a full set of parts or acknowledge their loss. You are correct about the top cover but a perfect copy can easily and cheaply be made.
On my car, which was built about a month before this one, there is no plugged hole in that location at all, so I got the impression this car was modified. Nice pickup on the missing wiper arm though, that's quite strange.
Possible crack in front right light lens.(clear portion). Overall a very nice looking example. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I also have an October 1985 build 328 GTS ( 20+ years) and can vouch for the excellence of that vintage! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm guessing the zipper for the rear storage bin is broken (like many of them). (Otherwise, they'd show it closed.)
Thanks all for the thorough and largely positive feedback. The issues raised don’t meaningfully diminish the value to me but I appreciate being made aware. The depth of knowledge here is evident. I bought it. My first Ferrari and the realization of a childhood dream.
FWIW, that's a functional issue, of sorts. The rear storage area has a lens that lights it from the running lights. That wouldn't work with the running lights placed in the outside position.
Originally sold by Monterey Ferrari, Jan 11, 1986. I can PM you the salesman and original owner (who was from Yorba Linda).
