308 spare tire in boot

If it is an emergency Tire (115/80 or so) face up
If it is a normal/full tire face down.

I think, other direction would not fit with the washerbag.
My emergency Tire fits face up.

In my 1986 328 it seems it must be face down otherwise the windshield washer tank won't fit- (unless I'm mistaken and please tell me...)

 

As stated, full size spare goes face down and try to get the hole on the rim aligned with the hole in the body so the hold down knob will fit. Its difficult to slide the tire around to align the hole if you miss first time.

 

Yes this is correct, this also allows you to store your toolkit and jack kit in the front.

 

Well, this is not what was intended for all 3x8s: the early 328s have a leather belt in the rear trunk, designed to secure the tool roll there...

My '86 328 has a rubber belt there as well. In front I have a full-size (front wheel) spare. I think the space is large enough for a rear wheel if you need to transport one after putting on the spare.

 

My early 308 GTB (#22963) has the rubber belt for the Jack pouch, too.

Mine was a full size (face down with the washer bottle inside the rim). But I sourced a 328 space saver which allows me to put the tool and jack kit in the front. I don't like them rattling around the luggage compartment, and the weight distribution is better. (No strap in the luggage compartment)

 

It's mainly the work of F-Chatter "TripleBlack"; I am modestly contributing from time to time, as some other friends as well, mainly for the translations as far as I am concerned.
We were teased by friends on the reason why we were not writing a book about "3x8s", and the Truth is that the knowledge on these cars is still growing, so we decided that a website would be more appropriate, as it can be amended, corrected, etc...when needed.
But to be fair, the administrator and editor and director is "TripleBlack" indeed.

Trust me, for 16" wheels it is. It is tight. I've had to test this

 

I guess it depends on what size tire you have or maybe the shape/size of the fiberglass surround changed in later years? I tried fitting one of my rear tires in the spare tire hole and it was a no-go. I didn't have a spare anyway. Also on my '78 GTS the strap for the tools was on the back right just like the picture Rob posted above.

 

My '81 NA GTSi too.
