I may have missed this somewhere but has anyone ever installed wan access panel in a 308 on the firewall behind the seats to access the front banks? Curiosity more than anything else. Thanks

I've never seen it done. Nor would I do that.

Not that I would but I’ll bite. Why not. It’s been done on other Ferrari’s and the pantera. A structural concern?

Great idea if you want to look at the exhaust manifold. Its all you'll see.

There are structural members and a ton of heat shielding there too.

Cams, head etc are easily reached and most accessible from the top. There is nothing there that cannot easily be done from the top.

In addition to those concerns, note that cars such as the Pantera and the 360 have longitudinal engines... So you need a different type of access than you do with a 308.

It’s still a good idea if it can be done the proper way.

It could be done. Can't say I haven't thought about it myself. But to do it right you would have to remove the engine, and there are several things mounted to the backside, which is welded to the structure.

So you can inspect the exhaust manifold heat shield?

I’m sure that it not the only thing you will see if access panel is there and if that’s the only thing, it will at least be easier to remove the nuts that holds the exhaust manifold or headers.

Depends on your point of view. Not having to pull out the motor, or the fuel tanks, or the deck lid, to do some of the simple things might be worth in to others.

I'm curious as to what procedures people would do, leaning between the seats with their arms through a hole in the firewall.

Well with the pantera you remove the seats and have access to the belts, etc. as it isn’t transverse.

Yes, I understand that. I'm referring to the 308.

My point of view is crystal clear. I have worked on 308s professionally since not long after they came out. There is nothing that it would make easier.

And the deck lid? It comes off far easier than your firewall panel would. It takes 2 or 3 minutes tops. How long to remove the upholstery covering the stupid panel? It takes a while to R+R the panel in a 360.

    A. No it wouldn't. Those are quite easy to get to. Besides, except for engine removal when do you take the manifold off?

I don’t care what you care about. I was trying to show Thorn who said he had to reach through a hole between the seats. Not sure when this forum devolved but folks used to be nicer here. I started the thread with a simple question so if you have nothing of value to add feel free to take your unwelcome comments elsewhere.

Correct, on a Pantera which makes some sense due to the engine orientation. Not applicable to this discussion on a 308 in any way. That was his point and mine.

Having 40+ years of experience would suggest something to add which several logic challenged individuals choose to ignore because of their ignorance of the issue.

Yes we heard you the first time but others in the forum are entitled to their opinion. I don’t even disagree but a simple disagree and why, since you have the experience, would be better than how you responded. But whatever, it’s a hypothetical forum thread and there are real life issues to worry about. So have a good one.

This thread is in the category for car-guy pub chat: "You'll never guess what someone suggested doing on a forum..."

In fact I doubt whether many people would believe this was serious so i'll need to have the link handy.

I disagree, I ignore because I don't think that you are the correct height!
