I'm in my late 60's and still actively drive my mint 488 GTB ( previously had a Scud ). No question that ingress and egress is a challenge but I love the thrill of the drive and the look of the car. Recently I have started to question if I should move on to a more "civilized" sports car ( ie. 911 Turbo S, AMG 63). I know it won't be the same experience but it may still satisfy the need to have a relatively fast and exhilarating sports car. Wondering if anyone else has gone through this phase, what they decided to do and if they have any regrets ?
Drive it until you can't. I'm 67 and have been driving the mid engine models for 23 years. Currently have a 430 I bought new in 2005 w/3pedals. Try some easy flexibility exercises if needed. Dave
I will be 76 on Saturday. My daily driver is a Porsche 911S. Getting out is an issue but all is well otherwise. My OTO 612 is more spirited
My dad just turned 70 and my mom is 68, and they're still driving their gated 355 Spider as often as the weather in Vermont allows...
I'm 65 and I recently drove my 328 (which is about 1/2 my age!) from Georgia up to New York and back for the FCA annual meet.
I am 64 and still drive my DINO or F12 and also have a911GT3(3 pedal) starting to consider selling something and getting a SCUD.. Also have a good friend that is 74 and still daily drives his 488GTB....
72 with 430, C7 Vette and daily driver a 3 pedal Cruze. Peripheral vision and reflex issues just means driving more carefully. Did sell the Fatboy but that is because distracted drivers were freaking me out. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
I drove my 355 Spider, and California into my mid 60's. Got tired of the maintenance costs, so out of the Ferrari world for now. Still drive our '05 Ford GT, and for everyday fun, I get the Hellcat Charger out for some mind bending acceleration.
I'm driving my Ferrari up until the day I die. In fact I may lead the funeral procession to my grave in it!
When your old and can no longer drive will you look back and say "Damn I should have kept the 488" I think you may. The AMG S63 brilliant luxury coupe (not a sports car in my book and I do have an AMG CL) that does not stir the soul or talk to you. The 911 very clinical in its driving. The Ferrari (well to me) they talk to you when you enter their bedroom (also called by many a garage) "drive me, drive me now, lets have some fun you wont regret it". Follow your soul and heart not your head. No other car (for me) drives like a Ferrari.
If you want a more civilized car, look into an FF. They are as fun as a mid engined Ferrari but easier to live with and on another planet when compared to AMG, 911, Panamera, Bentley, Astons etc..
I'm sixty and have a 308 and a 360. I drive the 360 a lot. No problems getting in or out because I work out like a madman and do tons of squats. I'm actually the strongest I've ever been in my life. Get an old Bowflex PowerPro off eBay. The rods are easy on old joints because no inertia or momentum like with iron.
At 60 I ran marathons and was in the gym lifting weights 6 days a week. A few years ago I had to have major spinal surgery and things have changed since then. Fitness is not the issue. This is a thought but don't think I'll have the same level of excitement with an FF. Truth is I want to stick with a mid-engine V8 but I'm starting to question if it's wise when there are "reasonable" alternatives and I am probably looking for validation to stick with it since my wife will be quick to talk me out of it.
What brought on the need for surgery, if I may ask? An injury of some kind? I too ran distance - 10K per day - but 10K is enough. I finished one marathon and decided never again. Now I do twenty minutes on my Max M5 before strength training, and that's it. No more high impact running for these old bones.
I met my friend Armando for the first time when he was 82. He drove a Testarossa. Died 3 years ago, when he was 91 and still driving his 458. Sent from my ANE-LX1 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
FFS WE'RE NOT ***KIN' DEAD!!! In March/April I drove my 365 on a return 3000 mile drive from Brisbane to Victoria. In July I drove the same car on a 1000 mile return trip to NSW. Last year I drove my 308 on the same above event. Come back and ask us when we,respectively, reach about 99 YO !!!!!
In 6 years, by the grace of God, I hope that I can answer this in the affirmative. Buying a Ferrari is perhaps the most illogical thing my wife and I have ever done, and we're enjoying every friggin' minute of it! Get busy living or get busy dying.* T *Shawshank Redemption
Only 64. 328GTS from 2004-2016 512TR from 2006-present 355GTS from 2016-present Would love a 512BB and 488 someday and maybe a 599 too! Too much joy in the journey with these!
thank you everyone...you are all so encouraging....i only got my first one at 48, so five years ago...and i plan to drive them as long as possible...i was wondering how long this would be and maybe considering a classic F-Car in the future because you probably dont need 200 mph when you are 70...but hey...you are right guys..we are not dead
