Collected my new 308 today (29973) from Essex and she did the 160 mile trip without a missing a beat and not a puff of smoke.. thank you lord. Suspension is quite vocal (knocks and bangs) but the whole car is about to come apart for a full refresh of everything. It was so great to find a car that still has everything original on the car, clearly never been painted, still has all the original rubbers, fuse covers, masses of service invoices and bonnet foam seals (what’s left of them), fuel cap, etc etc.. just missing the battery cover plate and book pouch (got the books!) and a previous owner butchered the speaker grills with a pair of Kenwood speakers.. what was he thinking?! Anyway, excited with the new project!

After reinstalling the rebuilt fuel distributor and warm up regulator I started her up. She ran MUCH better than before BUT before I was able to declare victory I saw a wisp of smoke by the fuel distributor. Investigation showed one of the fittings for the sniffers aka analyzing pipes undone. Not only is it undone but it's toast, shot, ruined. That's where the exhaust plumes are originating from.

What do do? Hi temperature JB Weld? I'm not pulling the engine to drill or retap. I need a reliable band aid. Any advice guys?

Pulled mine out years ago, and took the heat shielding off. Hi-temp epoxy - there must be a lot of choices.

I finished preparing my car for Monterey Car Week. This year, that meant mostly cosmetic stuff.
    • I used Machine Polish (fine rubbing compound) to buff “swirl marks” from the rear haunches. It’s the first time since 2013.
    • Repainted some of the black feature line which was weirdly shiny compared to most of it.
    • Repainted my accelerator pedal for the first time ever.
    • Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned.
    • Polished, polished, polished.
    • Waxed, waxed, waxed.
    • Put in my factory floor carpets.
    • I have 10 small dents in the car (it’s amazing how many there are when you start looking). Had a paint-less dent remover look at them. His advice was to leave them; either in inaccessible spots or too minor. He told me to stop worrying.
    • I removed my seats to have a prominent scratch in the dye touched-up by an upholstery shop. The reaction was the other extreme to the dent guy: apparently my seats are in such bad shape that a spot touch-up would not blend into the filthy, grimy mess of my (concours-condition) seats. He recommended a re-dye. Actually, when he pointed out all the issues on the seats, I can’t disagree, although the seats look(ed) fine to my eye (except for the scratch). Seats are back in the car.

Changed main and ac jets from 145/240 to 130/220 and wow. The black smoke at wot is gone and the car sounds and smells fresher.

Also finished changing the speedo faceplate, so now the temporary yellow stickers on speedo and rev are gone. Yes, the choke light is green...

Weird - I've never seen a bulb in an aerial switch. Got a pic?

Replaced the belts in my car this morning, took a few hours although l didn’t install the A/C compressor as l think it has a leaking shaft seal..
Old belts were coming up to 5 years now so it was time..
They actually looked worse than l expected..

Deck latch catches were looking rather crappy with years of aging... surface corrosion and buildup. Pulled them off and hit a wire brush grinder, reinstalled with all new fasteners. Such a minor thing really, but investing a couple hours + $6 of bolts and washers really made an improvement.

    - New wiper-washer pump, replacing old gross corroded pump; bottle & bracket cleaned up. Chances I'll ever actually use it to spray the windshield: approximately zero.

    - New battery (oooh exciting)

Apparently my work this season was worth it. I didn’t get into Quail like BrianA but was able to finally squeeze out a Platinum at Concorso!
Sway bar rubber and refinishing is next. :)
