Always wonder why folks fly patterns they can't land from with a FO.

In my Citabria (which doesn't have flaps) you'd have to slip the entire way down if you turned base at the numbers. Assuming you wanted to land in the touchdown zone, anyway.

I'll bet your airplane draws more attention at a big FBO, by pilots at least, than a spank'in new Gulfstream.

On paper, same speed, but the Cirrus is a lot safer at 205mph :)

Never ventured in here before, but wanted to show my wife's grandfathers DC10 from a few years back. I never got a chance to fly in it, but he would take it from here in CT to Maine, and all about the US. Seems like quite a freaking plane.

    That's a DC-3, not a DC-10... small difference!

That DC-3 is still flying today-- in fact, she got a recent repaint into military colors-- I'm guessing to participate in the big 75th anniversary of D-Day events next spring.

Did your grandfather-in-law own it because he was a pilot, or a DC-3 enthusiast, or what? There must be an interesting story there...

Absolutely. That's not a "normal" plane for a private person.

Hmmmm, Flight Aware has it listed as a 'turbo-prop'.

Was that his '57 Thunderbird also?

That's a mistake in either the FAA's records or FlightAware's interpretation of them. It clearly has piston engines, and was filed as a DC3 on recent flights (DC-3 turboprop is a "DC3T").

He just turned 80. But owned this about 30 years ago. I know this because my wife flew on it to a Key West when she was 6 weeks old

He hired pilots tho, he didn’t fly himself.

He was kind of a flashy guy back then, she thinks he bought it for such. But eventually he lost it in a bankruptcy. Don’t feel bad though, he’s been broke and come back to multi millions more than 5-6 times lol.

Next time I see him this year I’ll ask more though. And get some more photos.

And yes the ‘57. Sigh. I was supposed to broker this for him 3 years ago but never got the chance. On deployment, the “shop” that was storing it sold it to someone illegally and didn’t tell him for 6 months. Lengthy battle. He lost the car and sued them for $27K and won.
