    Dear All,

I have just completed a 3500 mile cross country drive in my newly acquired 86 Mondial Coupe. The car ran great, until 100 miles from home when I noticed the headlights were inoperable. I did some trouble shooting today and note the headlights function normally if the on/off switch on the end of the stalk is rotated to an intermediate position (i.e. only 45 degrees instead of the full 90 degrees). The 45 degree position is unstable as the switch is not designed to be in that position; the switch is spring loaded and likely to snap back into either the on or off position (either one causing the lights to pop back down).

I could not see how to remove the stalk to disassemble/inspect it. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Mark

In case you missed it, it's best to put a baggie over the stalk's end before sliding it off. That little ball will fly to who knows where without...

    Just to close this thread:

This fix worked for me. The knob came off with gentle pulling away from the retaining ring and stalk. Soldering: I applied gentle pressure to the existing solder (using the tip of the soldering iron) and and it re-bonded easily.

I used a plastic shopping bag to capture the bearing.

    Thanks again!
