So judging by the pictures, at some point in time the entire car (save maybe the right side door, roof and interior) would have been replaced or repaired. How did the engine fair in the '93 crash?

Sorry mate, forget to paste the link http://www.classicsportscars.com/Ravana_Z_history%202vev.htm
Couldn't find any pictures of the Spa crash.....
From Bonhams " In 1992, '2 VEV' actively competed in the FIA Historic Championship and - having contested all but one round - actually won the Championship title. The car was then kept in the Isle of Man and in 1993, whilst being driven by Cussons, was involved in a road accident.

The damage was focused upon the left-front corner and left-side bodywork but the opportunity was taken to have the Aston Martin factory specialists at Newport Pagnell not just repair '2 VEV' but actually to restore it with painstaking care and accuracy to its present – now long-maintained - concours condition."

That seems to be a rather optimistic way of saying it needed to be comprehensively rebuilt...no...?

As the old joke goes - she'll hammer right out. But yeah, the entire front end would have needed replacing or rebuilding or whatever you want to call it.....

2 VEV has neither a matching numbers or a DB4 GT Zagato engine which must have held its value back by a few million. The engine in it is from DB4 GT 0122/R.

In its racing life it had a new block fitted before the Goodwood 1962 race. Does this original engine still exist?

I have been advised that, unless you are offering something worth multi millions, the three big auctions closed months ago. That said, they were holding back announcements until post Bonhams Goodwood FOS, since that was going to suck up the attention, and yet for most there will be another series of announcements to come in the next 10 - 14 days as they finish up their media rounds.

RM are also offering the 375 America #0327AL and 500 Superfast #8459SF

Gooding also adds two Maserati A6Gs #2110 & #2155, Ferrari 330GTC Special #09653 and Dino Speciale #00106. The last named will be interesting to see as its supposed to be a prototipo

Meanwhile, Mecum also added the Dallara that Alexander Rossi used to win the 2012 Indy 500 if thats your sort of thing.

RC1 - easily one of the greatest years ever

Usually the final big announcement for each comes with the release of the auction catalog. Surely RM can't have something bigger than the 250 GTO but they'll probably have another car in the $5m - $10m range which will come out then. Interesting to hear about the Gooding P car, excited for the announcement. Bonhams has been relatively absent from the fray besides the 250 GT SWB, but I'm sure they were busy with the Goodwood auction. Surely they must have a true star car lined up? I'd expect to hear about that next week.

The car was well bought, for all its interesting history. It needs £200k or so of correction to bring it up to the standards expected today. Last resto did not even get 'Z' in right place.

Re engines, I raced a DB4 in the 80s and 90s. Alongside 2 VEV. The Aston engines are weak and crack the blocks when you get around 300bhp+. DBSs were raided for parts.

Most of the contemporary race reports for cars with this this engine ended in engine failure, usually top end. Or rod through block.

DP215 now has correct engine, so does DP214. They will have been completely rebuilt and remachined at great cost. Quite amazing they have survived but these are exceptional cars.

    I tend to agree.

That's a car that I've been reading about for decades.

I agree 2 VEV 0183/R was well bought and is a very special car. Looks quite different to a standard Zagato being lower, longer in the front and back, wider and higher in the back. Moss described the Zagato as truck like in comparison to a 250 GT SWB and too heavy to be a racing car, though I don't know if he'd driven a MP209 car, which are said to be 300 pounds lighter than a standard Zagato, and over 500 pounds lighter than a DB4 GT which seems a lot????? I've read elsewhere the MP209 cars were 150 pounds lighter than a standard Zagato????? In lightening the car it is said to have lost some of its rigidity though I wonder if the factory strengthened the box section chassis, which was similar to the DP Project cars, during its racing life. They obviously weren't as well developed as the Ferraris being very fragile, lacking both their finesse and endurance. I notice the Bonhams description said the car was restored after the 1993 crash by factory specialists, so did the factory actually oversee this restoration or was it done totally independent of the factory? Does it have its original magnesium gearbox?

I totally agree with your points, yes there won't be anything at the GTO level, but they will still pretty much double their currently advertised lots and there will be at least another car at the $10 - 20 million level. A SWB is still a $8 - 12 million car depending on the spec and history and Bonhams are arguably the third most important of the top three, behind RM and Gooding.
