Cool thanks. Goes some way to explain the price - still be interesting to see if it sells...

On another F50 topic - a friend of mine (who does quite a bit of racing) just mentioned that despite the F50 being overshadowed by the F1 back in period the F50 was actually quicker on track due to a stiffer set up (the F1 being quite soft) - I imagine this would depend on the track but has anyone seen any lap times? (road cars - not the GT or GTR)

I'd say there's just a small chance that could be true on some circuits, but it won't be many as the F1 has both a power, weight and top speed advantage over the F50 and they each have recorded similar braking performance. To properly settle the score ideally the two cars would need to be tested on the same day and with the same driver to remove those variables, and I'm not aware of that ever having occurred.

There won't be many lap times on record for the F1 road car - McLaren only allowed AutoCar magazine to do any instrumented testing of their press cars and I don't recall them doing any circuit laps in that effort. The one recorded lap time I'm immediately aware for comparison was at Tsukuba Circuit where the F1 has the advantage by over 1 second, including a missed 2-3 shift at 12 seconds into the lap by the F1's driver, Naoki Hattori.

    F1 - 1:04.62
    F50 - 1:05.81

You can watch footage of the F1's timed lap here:

The F50's lap time recording falls within an hour long clip on YouTube, so you will want to skip ahead to 53:58 to catch the F50 segment. They first do a lap of Suzuka Circuit and then the comparative lap time from Tsukuba is recorded towards the end of the clip during a 5 lap race against some popular Japanese performance cars of the day - all of which it easily walks away from. If you want to skip direct to that race, it gets going at 1:01:11 in the clip. While not the only car on track like in the F1's clip, the F50 has clear air from the apex of turn 1.

You'll note that while the weather doesn't look great on either day, the track was warmer at 26° C for the F50's laps versus 23° C for the F1's. I think overall it makes for a fair comparison, and a solid counter to your racer friend's hypothesis.

Very cool. May I ask where you bought it? Also, what is the booklet in the photos in your post?

I bought it in Holland from a private seller. The booklet is the official press kit from 1995 (# 968/95) in Italian/English language.
