I like driving, so seldom leave Canada or the states. My favorite is driving to California from Vancouver. 101 freeway is a blast to drive down along the coast. My best trip was to the Ritz Carlton Laguna Beach.......................................

The Amalfi coast has been one of my top places. We chartered a speedboat to take us to Capri and we finished up the trip in Como.

One that's a bit off the beaten path: Pamukkale, Turkey. Nowhere else can you bathe in calcium travertines and go for a swim in a 2000 year-old Roman pool (complete with ruins and slightly radioactive water). Cheap, too. Loved it.

Just got back from a great trip in Italy. Favorite part was staying in Baveno on Lake Maggiore. Very relaxing. Many great restaurants in the area. Excellent walking trails into the hills above. Nice drives along the lake into one small town after another.Lake Orca is a short drive away. Just over an hour away from Milano.

Cool to read your experiences and get ideas for destinations...

    I've never vacationed in a place I didn't love...
We tend to avoid resorts, hotels, cruises. Our goals are to be independent so we can stop where we want. We find our own accommodations and rent a car (or in Peru, Egypt, Turkey we hired personal guides).. We - ya know - seek out "the authentic" - and I think we've mostly succeeded.

Norway - For everything. Brønnøysund, Fredrikstad, The Hvaler Islands, Stavanger, Seljord.. spent a lot of time there. Salmon & trout fishing, trekking, outstanding roads and infrastructure.
Sweden - Stay in Sigtuna, visit Stockholm harbor and the Skjærgård. Culture, food and fun.
Banff, Canada - Winter! Stay in a hotel downtown. Walking distance to everything. Complimentary shuttle to slopes for skiing, snowmobiling. Excellent food and nightlife. Beautiful scenery.
Perth & Freo, Australia - Stay at a boutique hotel in Freo. Rent an outback equipped truck. Sailing & surfing, fast friends, nightlife and accessing the outback.
Naxos, Greece - Best kept secret. Stay in the mountains, rent a car, explore a lot and visit the beaches. Scuba diving, food, small hidden towns, fabulous local people.
Ioannina, Greece - Second best kept secret. The drive from Athens is awesome. Stay in the Kastro. Day trip to the mountain towns, Meteora, enjoy the lake, culture, landscape, trekking, food.
Virgin Gorda, BVI - Personal favorite: Rent a house & jeep to explore, don't visit by sea. Local people, very private beaches, scuba diving, snorkeling, and food.
Peru - Absolutely phenomenal. Set up your itinerary and accommodations with a local Touring Company, with private guide and driver. Culture, natural landscape, urban fabric, trekking, museums, shopping, even a classic car museum in Lima, but don't forget to see the off-the-beaten-track places - Trujillo, Chichlayo, Arequipa, Puno, Pisac... and find the northern archeological ruins at Cajamarca..
Ayvalik, Turkey - Rent a house in the city or at a beach community. Genuine local city, walkable, great food, waterfront, beaches, bicycling works too. The crossroads of Greek Orthodoxy and Ottoman Islam. Guided tours or local bus to ancient Greek sites.

Cities - each one completely fascinating: Vienna, Paris, London, Prague, Budapest, Athens, Rome, Istanbul, Cairo..

    On our list:
    - Rent a house and boat on the Danube in Romania.
    - Pyrenees Mountains.
    - Sardinia or Corsica, each very different..

Photos from Naxos, Norway and Banff...

Best place I have ever been is Japan (Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, etc.) hands down. Best food in the world, super polite people, super clean, no immigrants, culture, almost everything is impeccable. The second best would be Switzerland. Also highly civilized like Japan, beautiful scenarios, just the food that is a bit of a deception, not that it's bad, it's just not as rich as Japanese or Italian cusines.

While I don’t travel nearly as much as I used to, some great places I’ve been to include:

    Southern Ireland,
    UK (London, Manchester)
    France (Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon)
    Italy (Bologna, Milano, Genoa)
    Switzerland (all over)
    Germany (Hamburg, Dresden, Frankfurt, Marburg)
    Lithuania (Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga)
    Czech Republic (Prague)
    Netherlands (all over)
    Denmark (Copenhagen)
    Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg)
Japan (all over, including Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima)
    Korea (Seoul)
    China (Hong Kong, Chengdu)
    Singapore
    USA (46 states)
    Mexico (Mexico City, Toluca)

Too many beautiful places, people, culture and food to pick a favourite. We’re going to UK, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in a few weeks. I’d like to hit NZ, AU, and more of SE Asia next. Africa would be another bucket list item.

I've heard over the years about American retirees going to San Miguel de Allende for a long time. Saw it up close and was impressed. Prices have skyrocketed from what it once was, so it's not the bargain hideaway any longer.
