That can't be a fact as mine is a 1978. I think the contrasting interior went when series 2 was introduced but I'm not certain.

You could order contrasting stripes from the launch of the 400 in 1976 up to the launch of the series 2 in 1982.

    Thank David!
(I managed to make a mistake reporting the f400 site infos: they state 2 tones were before 80 and not after as I wrote, sorry)

Thanks for the replies guys. Now this puts me in a dilemma. The door card inserts on mine were definitely the original tan colour, which would suggest the contrasting colour wasn't used. however Ive always liked the stripes!

My exterior colour is Blu Scuro which, although changes in different lights, is generally quite a dark blue. Im not sure the chocolate colour contrast would look right, but maybe a black.

I'll do some research but any thoughts?

Update / Query! - Just realised having black dashboard, black carpets, black inserts would probably have been specified? Seen a few 400GT's in the same, with different colour exteriors.

Graham, The brown used in my interior is a very dark brown - same as the carpets. That's maybe how they did it - color matched the carpets and inserts. I have never seen a 400 with contrasting leather that didn't match the carpet color.

I have two 1980 400iA's & both have the coloured inserts in the seat but neither matches the carpet colour. One is Pino Verde (Pine Green) & has green inserts but light tan carpet. The other was originally a light blue & has blue inserts & black carpet. I also have a 1982 400iA that was originally Nero Tropical (black) & has white seats with black piping - not sure what colour the carpet was to begin with but I suspect it was black.

At the end of the day I would do whatever colour combination you like.

    Cheers,
    Al

Hi Al - Yes Ive been researching this morning and there is a whole plethora of colour combinations, even black with light blue inserts (which I sort of like!)I

Think I'll experiment with the black inserts, see how I feel :)

Dark blue inserts (VM 3282) were commonly specified with a BEIGE VM 3218 interior and BLU SCURO exterior.
Equally all beige (no contrasting stripes) was also common with this combination.
    Cheers David

Thanks David. I see those codes are still current. Maybe I will get some VM3282 and give it a try.

Still here, busy doing interior bits. Tried the blue inserts but wasn't keen so gone with the black. Laquering today, just need to experiment with the correct shine, so will post up some finished shots later. Also want to go out today and get some new door speakers 'whilst I'm in there' and also treat the inner rear quarter panel with some wax / rust proofing whilst the rear cards ore off...better buck my ideas up really!

Beautiful! My passenger's side door card was in two pieces - probably due to one of the DPOs wrenching it off without noticing the extra screw. I went down the rabbit hole with my front seats as I noticed the slides weren't perfect (the seats rocked a little bit), so I rebuilt them - don't go there!
    Have you recoloured the leather?

Thanks. Finished the slides last week as neither were working properly, agree a complete mare to work with.

I recoloured as I wasn't happy with the original recolouring. Worst job was stripping the old, but that did allow some decent repairs to be carried out.

You could check out the BMW 2002 Tii + Touring and also E9 2.5CS and 3.0CS/CSi 1973-75. The trim look very similar but hard to say if it's a match.

    Motion to strike,Graham.

I think the plastic trim is the same as Peugeot 504 Coupe and Cabriolet. Equally hard to find I believe.

Gave her an exterior spruce up today, machine polished one side and roof and have to say Im not sure any respray works is going to get the finish Ive got at present. Im thinking now I might just try some localised repairs as its just too good to risk. Think I might just go and get some use of her with Spring on its way, bearing in mind my 308 has been away close on 12 months now and I don't want the same scenario.

Graham, the interior came out great - black carpets and black inserts looks the part. What's the black on the rear side panels ? Roll up curtain ?

Dont't mind the BMW tip - they are a look-a-like but use two screws. The Peugeot is most likely equal if you could only find a good close-up picture to confirm. They also come in different colors such as beige/brown/black. Remember both cars where assembled at Pininfarina so not unusual with same parts.
