Ralph owns a pair of silver F1 road cars - nearly identical save for some elements of the interior. One is chassis 055 and the other one is the second to last road car chassis number, 074. Both cars have been upgraded with new sets of doors to fit the optional High Mirrors so it would be easy to confuse the pair as one. He's had them both in his collection since 1997.

Thanks for clarifying! I wonder how often they’re all under the same roof.

    Hey Erik,

Was wondering if you could shed some light on the initial sales of the F1? Did they struggle to sell all the produced cars? Why did they sell 9 or 10 to the Sultan of Brunei? Did they manufacture to order and that's all the orders they received?

    Thanks!

I might be late to the party, but DK Engineering's Facebook page states #031 was recently sold again, and "will remain in the UK".

Last month I had a chance of seeing 01R at a prooving ground...what a beast. Sadly, pics are not allowed inside the facilities, but man, what a car.

    Hello all.

I have a few questions I hope can be answered by folks here.

Q1, There are 64 road cars. The last Chassis number is 075 I believe. So what 11 numbers did not get used? I understand that 019/026 & 027 became GTR's but that’s only 3. I also know one extra tub was made, did that get a chassis number (also I believe it has now been used, anyone know what car now has is second tub) ?

Q2 At the 1995 Goodwood FOS Mclaren had a small display that had 6 cars (there is a picture on page 20). They had GTR#01R,06R and XP5 but what are the chassis numbers of the other 3 cars?

Q3 There was a Red F1 with UK reg “7 GSM” Anyone know that chassis number (perhaps it was the red car from the 95 display)?

    Thanks in advance!

On Q1; The tubs for chassis 019, 026 and 027 were indeed repurposed to expedite the builds of the first three F1 GTRs - 01R, 02R and 03R. The procedure to build an F1 chassis took about 3 months, so there was simply not time to wait when the project kicked off to build dedicated chassis.

The other unused chassis numbers are 030, 032, 034, 035 & 041. No official explanation was ever provided for why those numbers were skipped, but potentially they became the platforms for building GTRs 04R through 08R if we apply a bit of logic.

Additionally, the F1 GT longtail road cars used the remaining three numbers that are missing from the sequence - 054, 056 and 058.

On Q2; the burgundy car is chassis 017 and the red car was chassis 028. The final one will take some additional study, but might have been 022.

On Q3; yes, chassis 028 again back in the UK after some years in Japan and a long period of time here in the USA as well.

I have what seems likely to be an email from you too and will get back to you soon on that.

Thank you Peloton! Yes that email is from me, I look forward to reading your reply.
Got to say I'm a little surprised to find out I've seen one of the four totaled F1's. I used to live close to Goodwood and as such went from 1993-2004 and 07/08.
Do you by chance happen to know what happened to the spare chassis Mclaren Cars made?
Finally if it helps you with ID'ing the third car on Mclarens "stand". The date was June 24th 1995 so that will eliminate and cars made 7/95 or newer (no idea how many that leaves you with).

The spare chassis wasn't given a proper chassis number - it was assigned "101SP" according to the documentation.

I'm aware that it was used in the reconstruction of one particular chassis, but don't believe the exact details of which one are known publicly.

We've exchanged some messages via Instagram already, but for anyone else's benefit who might still be reading along, there has been nothing properly new/current in either news or imagery concerning F1 chassis 039 which is MIA in Mexico. Hopefully it will turn up one day!

After so many years missed : now is the only time I appreciates the story and greatness of the McLaren F1. The first time I saw it in the flesh was in 2015 at a charity event by the supercars in Chicago. The chassis no. is 001 and in silver too. Sadly all supercars were cordon off. I attached some pics

Anyway, I envy you that were able to go, sit and ride the F1; congrats !!!

This picture was taken in October of 2002 or 2003 in New Hampshire at a car show at Bavarian Autosport. Unsure of year but the show was always the first Sunday in October.

I believe this car was 1 of 2 owned at the time by Herb Chambers possibly. Car was being looked after/maintained by the Turner Motorsports guys from Amesbury, Massachusetts.

Herb Chambers owned a single F1 road car, chassis 044, in silver from 1996 thru 2017.

The LM you saw belonged to Frank Selldorff at the time and he also owned a pair of F1 road cars - #068 and #007. Frank found new homes for all three of them, starting with the F1 LM in December 2004 which went into Ralph Lauren's collection.

I was fortunate to see it as well at McLaren of Philadelphia in 2016...hands down my favorite car. I won't be surprised to see it trade hands soon as the current owner's investment company went bust on a bad bet.
