It will certainly be interesting what develops the next decade. Many look at Hybrids as best of both, but the counter point is a compromise or imperfect design. I'm seeing trends going more electric than hybrid. It is like the extremes ICE and electric don't like a middle compromise.

Jayhawks plate? No Babo plate available? :)

interesting thread, thanks for sharing. they need to place Tesla chargers at tourist traps....you can see the biggest cowboy hat in Texas while charging your car, etc. would make the longer "refill" times vs. ICE more entertaining :D

    Texas!
Now, I know you’re lying. Electricity in Kansas? Next, you’re gonna tell me they have indoor plumbing.

Really interesting, practical and pragmatic trip report. Thanks for taking the time to detail.
I love the notion but Tesla's just wouldn't work for what I need. Emergency trips out of SoFla where you could get stuck in gridlock. What do you do if you get stuck in a 3hr traffic jam in mid 90° heat? Charging station planning required when there is no plan. It seems like a road trip turns into a bit of a hobby.
I think I may buy an i3 just to live with the technology in town but the range and time to charge is a show stopper for me.
I really like the Tesla too. Great size, drives well, looks good...

certainly, I wouldn't recommend Tesla for highway for more than 400 mile trips if there was supercharger somewhere midpoint. For that type of trip you wouldn't lose much time vs. stopping for gas, bathroom, and lunch. For our trip 3 stops we ended up 60-90 minutes delayed and still had to charge destination. 3 hour gridlock wouldn't work great either although if car not moving or going slow the only battery usage would be AC. Tesla S can have 600 mile range if you slow down. Jennie can have bad DFW traffic 25 miles, but worst case is 1 hour, so Tesla is fine.

Where's Tillman? Tesla would be absolutely perfect for his commute.

That seems a VERY reasonable degradation in battery capacity for that level of use. I'm impressed!

Let's run the numbers. My commute is 100 miles a day round trip. I drive a 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth that averages about 30MPG on the commute. But for easy math let's call it 25 MPG.

    100/25 = 4 gallons a day. Call it 2.50 a gallon, we are at $10/day.

    10×5×50 =$2500/year in gas costs.

A secondhand Tesla runs 50K now. I paid 11K for the Fiat. For easy math call it 40K difference.

Assuming free electricity, that's 16 years to make up the difference. Even throwing in oil changes on the Fiat, the economics don't work out for me.

yep, the cost of Model S and depreciation doesn't make cents. we'll see what kind of economical cars come out on market, but I imagine for quite awhile ICE cars will be more economical.
