MotorWeek tested the e39 M5 and said it was the greatest sport sedan of all time. I think that statement still stands in terms of the model's impact, even though faster cars have come since then.I remember reading in European Car magazine about the magazine's guy boiling tire smoke off the tires and 400 hp, which seemed a lot back then.:D

Ignition think the Chevy SS has finally surpassed the e39 M5.

Chevy SS is a really fine car and may be last of an era when you could get a sedan with NA engine and manual trans.

I've been looking at them but not a huge fan of pushrod V8's and the mpg is lousy for a dd.

E39 M5 is probably the best looking modern sedan of all time.

I think the car is great but the look is blah.

Bad shock on a race track is a pretty big deal. No doubt, the new SS adjustable shocks are a nice advantage. 15 years worth of technology does help.

Similar story, maybe not quite the same outcome:

Full disclosure: I have an E39 M5 (now supercharged and better suspension) and there is nothing out there today to combine luxury, performance and everyday practicality (to say nothing of stealth!) that beats it. BMW got it right over 15 years ago.

Nice! Have you made any posts with more details on your E39? I'd love to learn more about the mods like suspension pieces to improve it. The s/c is more than I'd probably every do to one, but the suspension stuff is what interests me the most.
