    I would argue the no training value part. Perhaps they were just doing instrument maneuvers. I'm sure you could figure out a series of vertical S's that would give you that shape. In fact, I distinctly recall in pilot training that one could plan a T-6 MOA instrument profile in the simulator that would result in a profile view (as opposed to what I guess is a plan view seen here) on the sim control console.

    Ahh, my Navy brothers..... Maybe they thought they were machinist mates. You know, just a couple of nuts hanging next to a shaft.
