I am on the fence with regard to buying a 360 or an F430. I would greatly appreciate feedback from those that have experienced both cars.

I typically hold on to my cars for 10+ years and would expect to drive it @ 3,000 miles a year.

The lure of the the 360 is:

    - can easily find a gated car
    - less expensive
    - I like the lines a bit better

    With regard to the F430

    - no belt issues
    - more of a performance car
    - more modern
    - already have a manual transmission Porsche which which gives me variety

    My assumptions:

    - prorated over time, the maintenance costs average about the same or close
    - The F1 will not get boring
    - should get at least 10K miles out of an F1clutch
    - build quality is better in the F430

With regard to maintenance and service - I can do the majority of it (I would need to bring it to an indy to set the PIN for the clutch or if there was a problem that required software for diagnosis).

The F1 clutch will last ALOT longer than 10,000 miles if you know how to drive it.

    I love my F430.

I’ve owned both and your comments and assumptions are pretty accurate. The only thing I would add is to really track down service records so you know the car was maintained properly and confirm clutch life. Clutch measurements are an issue with both cars. When I bought my 430 they were all over the map between the seller, the local dealer and the PPI because the software can be manipulated for clutch life and there are different versions of TCUs depending on the year.

Yep, belts or chains makes little difference in overall maintenance costs.
Over time you will come to love the F1. It is very fun to drive.
Eric is right about the clutch, think more like 40-50K is pretty easy.
Build quality is about the same between the cars.

I went with the lines I like the best. The 360 is a little more engaged to drive than the 430 as well.

I got the 360 simply because i like the lines MUCH better. Maintenance is the same, who cares about a 1800 belt service every three years, thats just noise in the big picture. If you learn how to drive the F1 and have a mechanic who will adjust the PIS every 6 months or so for you for free then there is no reason to not get at least 30-40k out of the clutch

To me it's jsut a matter of what looks better to you. Unless you are tracking it either is more than adequate for the street

I've not driven a 360 but I have an F1 430 and a manual 911 and the combination is great. Manual 911 is just brilliant on tight country lanes, F1 430 in another league on track and more open roads. You may find the 911 and 360 too similar in power whereas the 430 is a significant step up and thus keeps things interesting.

I’ve owned both. Had aN 02.360 and now own an 08 430. While I liked the lines of the 360 better, the 430 is a more modern car with much nicer interior and more HP. Both cars were F1. Find some local examples and drive them both. You’ll know what you want.

I’ve had a 911 with a PDK system that blows away the 360/430 F1 system for a few years, and if you’re into the fully engaging driving experience, no auto will ever make you happy. Gated or bust.

I had a 2003 360 Spider. Sold it and now own a 2006 F430 Spider. Both cars are outstanding but I like the F430 better.

Your posted inputs are spot on.

The F430 F1 transmission ECU in my opinion is much better than the 360.
There is definitely much less clutch slippage compared to the 360 so I too expect to get better clutch life on my F430.

Before I sold my 360 I had to replace the clutch. At 21,000 miles it had 78% clutch wear and the transmission started popping out of gear.
Removed and replaced clutch and all is good again. That was $8,600.00. Ouch!

The usual when buying a car - find one that is very well maintained with service records in hand, clutch newly replaced, low mileage, excellent condition.

    I am 1000% happy with my F430.

I sold my gated 360 to get my scud, so not a fair comparison, but from my limited time in a regular 430 I would choose the 430. It's a more developed model, since the two cars share so much in common. Think of the 430 as a 360.2. I tracked my 360 some early on, and the oil temps were always higher than I was comfortable. I took a student for some hot laps in his 430, and the oil temps were so much more stable. The 430 has better build quality, more power, and less maintenance. The only downsides to it is it feels a little heavier (because it is), and there are more parts to go wrong with the F1 setup. Both are great cars though.

I have a 360 3-pedal car and a 430 Scuderia (Scuderias are all F1), and if I could only keep one, then I would likely keep the 360 3- pedal car. If your heart is leaning towards a 3-pedal car, then I would go with the 360 3-pedal car. No e-diff to worry about, no F1 to worry about, ... a more basic car.

For me, i actually liked the f430 lines better than my 360....I kind of "settled for it" as I could get a great price on a 3 pedal. BUT, once I saw my 360 side by side with a 430 at a show, I actually appreciated the 360's lines better....although there still some details about the 430 I like better (interior, headlights, tail lights, motor). Until a 430 price is on par with my 360, it isnt a hard choice for me, or one I regret. I don't expect that to happen.

gated 360 is cheaper up front and will be worth more than F430 in 10 years, plus looks better & sounds better.

f430 more modern, but who cares, it's not a daily.

I had a 360 Spider that I absolutely loved. I traded it for a 430 Spider when the 360 needed belts and the defroster vents warped. When I realized I was looking at a $10k bill it made more sense to trade the 360 for a 430 that had only 4K miles on it. As much as I loved the 360 I've never regretted the move.

Mine is. And I will say it is a very easy car to live with daily.

Also I prefer the 430 looks to the 360. Just that but more aggressive and less 'melted jelly bean' without going full on Lambo.

I would not trade my stick 360 even for an F1 430. The 360 is the most beautiful mid-V8 Ferrari has ever made, to my taste - and I have a 308 - and nothing beats or even meets a stick for us old guys. Sure, the 430 es mas macho, and it is objectively a superior automobile, but I don't buy Ferraris objectively; I either fall in love with them, or I don't. I love the stick 360. I'd take an F1 430 if you gave it to me. A 430 stick is another matter altogether.

Stick 360's are never going to be more affordable than they are now, IMO. The late 430 F1's will probably drop some more.

Don't think I hate the F1 either, because I'd rather have an F1/a 612 for a touring car than a stick (But the stick is an investment grade car), because the auto mode in town/traffic is a huge advantage. Still the F1 is fun out on the back roads, and that's where the sport part of sport touring happens.

I actually understand if some of you younger guys prefer the F1.

I don’t have to think twice if I can afford it, the latest model is always better. Before I bought my 2008 F430 spider, I was looking for f360. Since the price a bit more, so I bought the F430 instead.

Rowan, I’ve been debating this topic for a few months now and it can go on forever. $100K or so will easily buy you a nice example of both, 360 MT or 430 F1. 360 MT I don’t think will lose any more value, the 430 F1 will. Drive both, stare at both, go with the one that gets you more excited. You can always sell and change up...

The main difference for me was the 430's bigger engine and better performance. The 360 was fast but the 430 is another level up. As for looks I liked them both but I think I like my 430 more now. The only real reason I changed up was to get a manual trans. Surprisingly no 360 manuals for sale here while I was looking or in the 4 years I owned it. In that time 2 manual 430's came up and I pounced on one when a friend wanted my 360.
