Yeah, it's called synthetic vision and is pretty much exactly what you see out the front of the aircraft, including runways etc. Most modern aircraft would have it by now and it's one of the biggest improvements in situational awareness (and therefore safety) I've seen. The view is the same, day, night, in cloud, whatever.
All the best for the ferry flight! The Pilatus factory tour would have been awesome.. it's probably harder to get into than the Ferrari equivalent! I dropped by on a relatively quickly organised Swiss trip without the required booking way in advance just to try my luck on the day in case there was a single spot but no go.. I bet the short field performance is awesome and you'll have a great time with it.. the fact these guys make a jet to be dirt strip capable shows what they can do..
Geez the 777 looks nothing like that ! More like a 707 compared to that bit of KIT........Enjoy the trip home Steve!
Thanks Alex. If you get the chance in future try to organise it. They have just in the last couple of weeks opened a new assembly hall which was still being filled (I think I got some pics of the first couple of production -24s in there). Lol. All modern superior pieces of equipment are... Cheers Gary. Day off today and tomorrow so we'll do some local sightseeing. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Have a safe trip Steve - will be following on live tracker. Boy, that thing looks like it handles like a FEV12OHOS! Nice work, though. Hats off to the pilot. Went on a ludicrously steep chairlift today, and enjoyed lunch and a beer in what is without doubt the most spectacular location I've ever been. No picture can do it justice, but it was breathtaking in every direction. The return is near enough a vertical plunge back down the valley, and not for the faint hearted. Most of the way on the drive there and back I was thinking "what an amazing place this would be to drive the 355". Despite the snow on the top of the 10000'+ peaks it was 25-27C on the road and at the cafe. Perfection. Pfffft. This trip has displayed yet again how annoying those poxy phones are. Every normal person I know I can send endless pics etc anytime I have wifi for free. For the losers with Samsung phones I have to send them via email or expensive mobile data. Joke. And - in all seriousness - the pics I took today with my phone are every bit as good as the cumbersome SLR I've been lugging around with me, if not better. I can honestly say if there was one spurious piece of luggage I brought from home it's the big camera, not the thongs. They've been handy at breakfast time.
You are spot on. I've worn them at breakfast, but they were banned for all official duties. Luckily you've provided those file photos of your good self inhaling the moretti thong so the rest of Switzerland knows what they've missed out on.
I've been working on squeezing the most out of every image device out there because as the saying goes there is no better camera in the world than the one you have with you.. As well as the typical SLR+lenses+filters I've found polarising filters to snap onto the iPhone which does a great job of making the most out of outdoor/sunny/water pics that are otherwise bland without it.. so that is an awesomely compact and portable system then. Do you do any video when flying? I've used the Garmin VIRB to great effect. It is controlled by buttons on the box or app.. depending on what you find best.. also can get an aviation kit for it plugs your headset inline with it and can capture radio along with images. The VIRB has standard GPS on board for height, speed etc and can optionally hookup with Garmin panels for getting pitch, yaw etc. All data goes into a parallel file with the video and using their desktop app you can then load and overlay preferred instruments, e.g. dials for cars, HUD for planes in many combinations and punch the button to generate single video to upload/whatever. I also have a mini tripod for it so can do easy time-lapse if want and is a nice bridge between the iPhone and SLR.. horses for courses. Of course its immersible and plan to do some in/under water and surf stuff as summer comes along..
I haven't done any videoing of flying, but that sounds like an interesting package for sure. Heading down for breakfast now. Were planned to depart at 0630UTC give or take a bit. Callsign is VH-FXZ
Over Ionian Islands - Kastos then Astakos has to be Papland! Trying to send you a link but he is going so fast it keeps tripping over itself.
I jumped onto FlightRadar24 and did a search on the callsign.. According to that he's nearing Athens https://www.flightradar24.com/VHFXZ/e4b8a81
Thanks Alex, I like how it shows all the aircraft in the vicinity ..... I hope he can dodge all those flies
