Hey everyone.. My friend Peter Petrov is a 75 year old mainly British Mechanic, and over the years he found the time to completely restore a 1960 Austin Healy 3000 with an Automatic. He has had the car for some 30-40 years, but said when he dismantled the car to begin the restoration he found that the automatic conversion looked very factory, and feels they did do a few factory automatics probably. Borg Warner trans.. Just not sure how to get information on these cars. Peter would now like to sell it since he's getting old and all.. Never heard of an AH 3000 automatic. But by 1966, the factory supposedly had 6 automatic prototypes testing. And one can't rule out that the idea began years earlier. Source: https://ateupwithmotor.com/model-histories/austin-healey-100-100-6-3000/5/
In 1960 BMC started to fit the Borg-Warner model 35 autobox to many models. I can not see Healey getting involved at that point. The box was a dreadful 3 speed affair with all the wrong ratios,and in some lower powered cars,such as the Morris Oxford,was downright dangerous. I just wonder with the Healey mentioned above,that the power plant,inc box,has been replaced by a unit from one of the bigger saloons (A110/Wolseley 6/110/princess 3 litre). It seems that it was much later with the Healey/RR 4 litre that an auto option was considered.
