Hello, My 512 TR has developped a high-pitched whining sound in 2nd gear. The sound is a bit like the sound of straight-cut gears (racing cars and reverse gear on most road cars) but with less volume. It whines in 2nd gear at all revs and all loads. Any ideas? Will I have to have the gearbox opened at the next engine-out service (in 2 yrs)? Thanks, Alex
I think you should move your service date up to now and stop running metal filings through your gearbox because it sounds like the teeth are galling.
I would A. Check the oil level. B. Pull both plugs and check for metal debris on the magnets C. Have someone really familiar with the flat 12 gear box drive it and offer an opinion. I had one where the ring nuts on the shafts came loose and caused noise issues. Easily repaired in the car and would have been really expensive if he had not stopped driving it. I also had one that had a full circumference split in one of the shaft bearings that locates the shaft. It was making noises and again was easily repaired in the car avoiding really expensive trouble had it not been looked into. Bottom line is stop driving it, look into it. Noises in these transmissions get expensive if not addressed right away.
There is almost nothing you can't see in that gearbox while i'ts in the car and as Brian said there is a lot that can be repaired while still in the car. Also agree with Newman and Brian. Stop driving it.
Thanks guys. I'll stop driving it (I don't drive it much right now anyway as it's part of a collection of 9 cars) and have it trailered to my specialist and inspected. Cheers,
I too have a problem with my 2nd gear, it makes noise (sounds a bit like a bad bearing). The car is also a 512TR. I know it is an old thread, but did you find the problem? And how well can you get to the gearbox while it's in the car? What covers need to be taken off?
