thinking about it..... protects the paint etc, and gives the car an updated look.

    what are the downsides?

Depending on the installer, the thickness/thinness of the paint, and how long you leave it on there you may or may not run into issues. If the installer isn't that good and uses a lot of adhesive it will be hell the day you choose to remove it. If the paint is thin it has a chance to pull up if you want to remove it later on. When going for a full color change its best to go with someone that will remove bumpers and doors so the jambs are done as well making it look factory. That gets up there in price around 6k or higher depending on the car.

    Pros:
    - It's trendy
    - Clear films can offer some moderate paint protection
    - Allows for some experimenting in colors and liveries

    Cons:
    - It's trendy
    - A full job with jambs etc can be expensive, approaching an actual paint job
    - Removal can be a PITA / risk of underlying paint damage
    - Depth of color will never have the same quality as actual paint

Looks like an incomplete paint job. Like you ran out of money and the car is in primer or you can't afford to clear coat it at this time.Ok for some hot rods and rat rods I guess.

If it is a well done wrap, I don't see issue besides cost, hassle of application and taking it off. Doubt it would damage anything, but again that is only if it is done professionally.

I believe Ferrari has matte as one of their paint options, and we know that paint can easily be $40k, so I would not say that a matte wrap looks cheap or incomplete.

As for the style in general, I feel that it mutes the lines, which diminishes the beautiful design. Gloss makes lines pop without being too reflective like metallic.

+1 seems like it would be just as effective to have the car sprayed with a matt clear coat. would look perfect .. If you like that kind of look. still orig paint with an extra coat of clear...

I just saw a car BEAUTIFULLY wrapped.

The guy who did it can do absolutely any color. Gloss, matte, real-looking carbon fiber, even brushed aluminum.

He removes all trim, so that there are no cut lines, say, under a door handle.

Just gorgeous. So looks isn't it.

Does it hold up for weather? Is it like clear-bra'ing your whole car?

Compare a wood-patterned wallpaper to actual deep-rubbed, aged mahogany.

    There's the down side. ;)

Depends on the color. Matte white can look good, or blue.
Matte black has the primer unpainted look, imo.
If I ever got tired of my Rosso corsa (doubt it), I wouldn't hesitate to do a matte white wrap...I think it's the one ext color that would go real well with my Bordeaux interior.

Downside? I've heard some owners later discover exacto knife cuts in the underlying paint from when the wrap was installed.
I imagine you'd have to be careful when washing the car as well.

You nailed it. Frankly, I don't get this primer coat look.
