I've been a lurker for years. Had a 550 and a 355 Spider. Both sold. Recently acquired a 1981 512BB targa Straman conversion. I've lusted after Boxers for years. I have always been a purist. But one reason why I sold my 550 was that my wife has no interest in sitting in a closed roof car. The Boxer targa is a compromise but hits all the marks.

In my opinion, it's a beautiful car and the sound of the carbureted 12 with no top is crazy, the throatiest roar I've ever heard. Car drives well with some cowl shake felt on certain road imperfections.
    Over all it's a keeper.
Was wondering if anyone has information on what Straman did with his conversions, how he built and reinforced them?

There are some reinforcing bars mounted under the rockers.

    Congrats on the purchase!

Do the quarter vents have glass behind them or just open to outside? Reason I ask is one I was considering didn't have glass.

Care to share the chassis number? Even privately? Would love to see if it's the one I was considering.

No glass behind the vents. If you put your fingers in feels like a sheet of styrofoam.

Thanks for the chassis number. I didn't realize it was a RHD until the pics were flipped! The one I was looking at was LHD.

My notes say Jim Lyons was selling that car in 2013 asking $159K USD. I spoke to him about it and the other one was a Bobileff car in CA at the time when I was looking into it.

Yep, my fault and I apologize for it. I took a shortcut in my photo-editing app and flipped them instead of rotating them. Didn't realize it until now since I didn't know what the pics were *supposed* to look like.

Here they are rotated as I should have done originally:
