My recently had a factory warranty new gearbox placed. Car has been perfect since the service. Went to drive the car yesterday, after it has been sitting for two weeks and the this warning light comes on. It says that the catalytic converter is overheating and it is a priority O get to dealer ASAP... My question is, How can the catalytic converter be over heating if i haven't driven the car for two weeks and I just started it??? What should I do, short of sending the car back to the dealer again....

Did you have the battery tender connected ? There might arise nuisance warnings when Battery-Voltage is a little low...

That or a sensor issue. Try restarting and see if it is still there

I am betting it is a glitch, as Alex says try restarting and see if she
rematerializes the code after repeated drives, if she doesn't
great, if she acts up take to dealer and have sensors checked,
in any case should not be a big issue, if the exhaust is all stock
and you are running 93aki fuel max. there is no reason for that kind
    of a code

I had this exact thing happen to me and it was a faulty sensor that the dealer replaced.

I think they recycled the black box also.

I had a 2013 coupe that did that 4 or 5 times. All I did was turn it off and turn it back on. If I recall, I think it only happened in cooler weather.

The code probably became a hard fault which is why it is active: imho take to
    the dealer

Fwiw doubt it is the same problem, the issue in the earlier thread
seems to be with the car going into recovery mode (the ecu cuts the power
when it senses a security/airbag connectivity issue or other), the issue
described in the present thread is just the cat overheating with (apparently)
no loss of power, which most prob. indicates a faulty sensor..

    Just my .02 :)

I would take it to the dealer and have the issue sorted out first

    Faulty sensor IMPO
Ferrari V8's and the older V12's are hard on their cat sensors.
ALWAYS get it hooked up to the official diagnostic, clear the codes and get it looked at.

Can't tell you how many F-cars I have encountered with a boatload of retained fault codes because tight-wads do a DIY reset hoping it will go away.

    It's thrown a fault for a reason.

I would definitely have the dealer look at it. You don't want to drive a car with that little voice in your head questioning whether or not you should drive it. That being said, weird electronic issues are often traced to the battery and while the car is there I would have them test the battery. I don't know about the tender they included with the 2013 458s, but the ones they used to supply were just good enough to hold the charge in the battery where it was when you plugged the car in- it really wouldn't add to the battery's charge. If you drive shorter drives, over time you are slowly depleting the battery. There's a chance this is your problem. Its worth exploring. Ask your service advisor about this. I've replaced the OEM tenders with the CTek 7002 model and have had no such problems (anymore!)...

Agreed; also, any overheating warnings should be looked at by the
    dealer imho

Update on My 458 condition... Dealer checked the car. Now needs 4 O2 Sensors they told me to replace them ( under Warranty) and that should take care of the problem

I know this is a old thread but just had the same catalytic converter is overheating light come on but continued driving and then it went away after a couple of minutes driving.

I've restarted the car several times after that and the varning light never came back.

Should I still take it to the dealer?

On a side note I just got my battery replaced with a stronger battery (the same day as the fault code was showing), maybe it was just a temporary glitch?

Was the dash massage for cat overheating or cat temp implausible?

It was implausible warning go to dealer slowly, just as the right pic above in this thread.

And it just went away then after a couple of minutes of driving.

But before that I tried to restart the car 2 times in a row and the varning came back, and after the second attempt a couple of minutes later of driving with the warning light on, the warning went away and have not come back ever since, I've even driven the car quite hard... but it has not come back

It's likely the fault you are experiencing has nothing to do with catalyst temp. That is just a generic one size fits all dash warning that is triggered when there is any emissions related fault like misfire or faulty o2 sensor. First step would be to get your codes read by the dealership or to anyone else who can read OEM enhanced diagnostic data.. Then go from there.

    Thanks OpenFlash

Contacted my tech and he said just continue driving if the warning does not appear again :)
