    Wrong.

" The 2011 Sprint Cup season was the last complete Cup season with carbureted engines. NASCAR announced that it would change to fuel injection for the 2012 season.[2] The injection system used by NASCAR is a different system from that used in IndyCar Racing and other motorsports series and restrictor plates are usable with the NASCAR system; they were used for January 2012 testing at Daytona. The current restrictor plates are bolted beneath a throttle body that sits in the same place as the former carburetors.[3] "

    Call it what you will.

The NASCAR fuel injection system still starts life as a carburator atop the engine.

Instead of dumping fuel directly into the engine block, it uses a fuel injection system
that squirts fuel into the cylinders.

After spending a considerable amount of time in the garage during Speed Weeks and talking with those in the know I can say with certainty that Audi will start competing in NASCAR in 2017.

I was there as a member of a Goodys Dash team when Toyota first entered NASCAR in the Goodys Dash series and when Robert Huffman gave Toyota it's first win in NASCAR. There was a lot of resistance back then against Toyota coming into NASCAR but that has subsided and Toyota is now welcome which is evident by the huge permanent Toyota display that is front and center in the new stands of the Daytona Speedway.

The combination of skyrocketing costs, cap on number of teams per owner and the start and park rule has led to a smaller starting field so NASCAR welcomes any and all new manufacturers to the sport. Foreign manufactures are welcome because NASCAR knows it will only increase it's base. Audi knows the incredible popularity of NASCAR and is excited to tap into that market. A win on Sunday will increase sales on Monday and Audi only has to look as far as Toyota to see that success.

While Audi dominated with the technological achievement of the R18 they are looking for new mountains to conquer and what bigger mountain than NASCAR. The rules are tightly constrained in NASCAR so Audi will have to come up with minute inovations to stay within the rules but gain that winning edge which is no small task in the ultra competitive world of NASCAR. Audi has already made cutbacks in their current programs to prepare for the challenge of competing in NASCAR.

One big piece of their puzzle was finding the right driver. They have Tom Kristensen, their top driver but the reality is he drove for them in a car that was so much better than the competition all he really had to do was not break it. I watched him race in Sebring and about lap three he was already lapping the back of the field in a 12 hour endurance race. Not much competition in that.

While Tom K was a winner in the Audi R18 the prospect of him coming to NASCAR as Audi wanted was more than he was willing to take on. NASCAR has some of the world's greatest drivers with accomplishments in different series like Danica Patrick who has competed in open wheel, prototype and stock cars. Tom K has pretty much spent his career in that TV recliner position behind the wheel of the Audi R18 getting win after win with little to no competition. Faced with the reality of finishing his career as a back marker in NASCAR he opted to retire instead.

Audi will throw huge money at the current crop of NASCAR drivers knowing there are no other drivers outside the series that can compete with them and with the cars so closely equal in performance having the best driver is key to winning. Most drivers are locked into contracts but money talks and silly season comes around every year. It won't take them too long to lure a top driver or even get one of the top teams to switch to Audi.

Toyota is in with Audi soon to follow and I'm sure Nissan is not too far behind. The gates are open for other manufactures to join the fray and eventually NASCAR will be represented internationally which falls right into the the mastermind plan of world domination by the genius of big Bill France. There is really only one thing left to say.

    I really doubt that.

nascar is all about branding as well, they want to reach an international audience
because that means more exposure for them, more $$$.
And nascar is all about the $$$, not the racing itself AT ALL.
