hello - I sent the poster a PM; but 47437 was my car for almost 10 years; i sold it last year. (I don't visit these forums very much; feel free to send me an email if you want more info etc). Note - the air pump belt was removed when I bought it in 2005, and never replaced. (We don't have smog testing in NY); it appears that it was detailed and new tires put on after I sold it. i'm shocked there are no records; there was a 2" thick folder of documents going back to the early 80's; in fact I have a PDF of all of them that i will gladly provide....but it did need a major service when I sold it...(also, sold it during a rising market and am looking for something newer)

    Good evening all,
I received the PM from Kevin ( wolfgang5150 ). I will try to schedule a PPI on the '85 soon. But if that turns up any major issues, I might have to consider the '83.
    More to follow.

    Jim

PS - Wolfgang5150, I sent you a PM. Hope you got it. But with my limited computer skills, it might be lost somewhere in cyberspace.

Wow. Amazing! Records somehow lost and now they can be provided to the next owner. And being able to know the history of the car from the previous owner over a 10 year period is huge.
If it wasn't for Ferrari Chat, all history most likely gone forever. So cool :)

    Jim:
Weird - I never got your PM. feel free to call if you like. In regards to the 83, let me point out a few things; first there has always been a door ding below the drivers side lock, see if its still there. Also - I honestly never once turned on the A/C; I don't even use it in my daily driver.....nor did I really even use the heat (strictly nice weather driving for me in the Northeast), so you - or anyone - should check those items out. More importantly though - this car has been driven roughly 150 miles TOTAL since October 2014; I have a photo of the odometer from that time. On this forum Bones2U was trying to sell this car all last year (for significantly less than this dealer); not sure who he is, because that's not who i sold it to....
So, the ad says 'major service just completed', i would be very curious as to how much work was done (just the belts?)...i would also double check with the dealer about the missing records.
I can answer any questions about the car, including the owner previous to me who owned it for 18 years.....

Not that we know for sure but this partly why I wouldn't buy from a dealer. The owner in between could have kept them too.

Hard to trust people these days. There is a 308 for sale now, Chassis number 35455. I emailed them and asked if the car had been repainted. I was immediately emailed back and was told that "it left the factory red" with the usual spiel about having documents, etc.

Problem is I have known the car and the original owner since it was new. I have a stack of photos 35 years old. I told them because I felt that they just didn't know (how could they be sure now?)

I never heard a peep back. Someone is going to be sold a car that is being misrepresented. If they are going to hold that back, what else would they not tell a potential buyer?

Yep...indeed: we were discussing a US 328 that is for sale by a professional (but not a Ferrari specialist) here in France.
The add says the car has "11.888 kms" (about 7.300 miles)
The odometer says "10.169", but is in miles...
There is a Carfax which says that in 2003 that car had 39.000 miles...

Be carefull with a carfax. Lots of mistakes in those. My ex TR showed 99,000km on the CF many years ago plus other wrong readings and in fact the car had 36,000 km when I sold it. Very easy to tell by the condition of the car it was NOT a 60,000 miles Canadian car.
Does the carfax show a steady reading accumulating miles or is there a sudden jump in the records?

It's so sad that dealers/sellers will say or tell you anything just to make a sale keeping a lot of unknown information about the car to the buyer.

So true... Hence why a thorough PPI by an independent and knowledgeable 3rd party is so important.

I've also invested in a paint meter... It's really great to not have to even ask if the paint is original or not or if there's been any accident or filler on the body - all you have to do is meter it and you know! Another plus: dealers seem to look at you / approach you differently when you show up with one of these and ask if they mind that you meter the paint thickness - a lot of the BS stops.

    Cheers!

That isn't the only time I have seen it happen.

About 3 years ago an 80 GTSi popped up for sale with XX,XXX "original miles" along with the usual "all documents, etc, etc..."

Again, I knew the car and had a photo from July 83 clearly showing a different speedometer. I emailed the dealer/seller a couple times. Once he saw I had the goods, I couldn't get him to respond back to me at all. Of course I wasn't surprised, but some guy in Texas was sold a car and was told something that was not true and the seller knew it because I told him myself.

I would have concerns about honesty here. The cars had paperwork, tool kits and appear to be 20-30k above the price they acquired them. Hard to pay such prime and find out later one needs to invest more in major service. The fact that they did the "service in house" doesn't necessarily inspire confidence. Are they Ferrari techs? I agree that a ppi could be reassuring but, I'd rather, do a ppi, and buy from private party. Save the tax money and use it towards whatever the car needs to be up to date. 80k for the '03 and 85k for the '85 is too much. There are cars in better shape that are not getting that much even in the auctions. I've seen quite a few cars advertised at those prices for a long time without selling. Of course, there is always someone willing to overpay but that's their prerogative.

    Hi Daniel (dvelez2),
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, those are legitimate concerns.
I will wait for PPI results and try to negotiate a better price.

Any 308 mileage is suspect because of the sending unit failures that are bound to happen at some point but those from 80-82ish are particularly vulnerable because so many people have swapped the speedometer to a 180 over the years.

Last year I almost bought a 81 GTBi that was being presented to me repeatedly as having only 26,000. Thing was I had know the car since 1992 and it had a 180 speedometer in it by the time I was going to consider getting it.

One thing we can all be sure is that even with a funny mileage history, we can all be certain that it isn't going to have over 200,000 miles like some traveling salesman's Honda. Frankly I would be really surprised if one has close to 90,000 tops (I have almost 120,000) but still...

    Hello all,
I purchased the '85 QV. The PPI was good. Johannes at Dino Motors said it is a sound car.
I want to thank everyone for all the great advice and for sharing your knowledge. I will post photos if I can figure out how.

    Mike,
    Thanks.
The test drive was fun. Did not want it to end.

    Doc,
As you know, both vehicles had pros and cons. The '85 being the latest model year, and being easier to smog was the deciding factors.
