I'll certainly take a look-see and report the findings, no guarantees, as you are probably aware the likeliness that an ad discloses any sort of VIN goes down as you travel further and further into the past. And regarding the ad from 2002, it goes to show that you need not go too far into the past before you notice the excellent performance of these cars as investments, though you still had to be a somewhat wealthy person to take part. It certainly ran laps around silver and gold in most cases. I think this forum was around at the time, I wonder if there are any threads about the market in the archives from that era?
Allright, I was able to find your car being offered in the FML 32 and 1/2 years ago, it's the bottom ad. The car would later be repainted in red some time in the 90s. On that exact date $1 US translated to 0.5127 Sterling. Possibly there could be more, I'll continue to keep my eyes open. this is MY FAVOURITE thread, by a mile... I can't even begin to recall anecdotes of some of the cars I've seen listed...Telephone numbers not remebered for 30-40 or more years!(old age!) this is a real stroll down memory lane for me-really incredible stuff... For example: 340 Mex in Lexington MA...as I recall...a number at MIT Lincoln Laboratory..I think? The guy across the corner from Franklin Park....jeez...Peter Sefarian told me about that car, along with a Family freind from Dedham/Milton...."some old junk Racing car...one of those "Italian playboy" cars...are you interested in that stuff? Not as long ago as these other examples, but during my early working life. I have just been looking through a Classic Cars from June 1996 - in there is a fully restored 250 Lusso for $150 000. Also a vendor has a 1964 Aston DB5 and a 1990 Bentley Mulsanne for the same amount of GBP 31500. One is now worth about 20 x (?) more than the other.
Without wanting to hijack the thread this same magazine also yielded some other interesting bits and pieces... 250 Europa GT - fully restored to concours at $135 000. Also the magazine had an advertorial for Lynx Motors - there was a shot of the workshop with Jaguar Lightweight PS1175 in for repairs (the one that Adrian Newey campaigns now). Also in the Lynx feature a picture of the Ecurie Ecosse transporter that sold at Bonhams in December.

Here are some interesting bits on GTO prices in the low/mid 70s, The first article is from the Cleveland Plain Dealer from Oct 71, about Joe Kortan, outlining his car rental business, which featured GTO #3589. While he got the car back in March of that year for the bargain price of $6000, he stated that a comparable car would go for $28k new at the time. This presumably led Chuck Queener to erroneously state in the Sept 1973 FOC bulletin that he had subsequently sold it for the price of $28k. Joe actually held on to the car until 1986, when he got Dr. Evil's ransom (one million dollars!) for the car. It's also unlikely that 3851gt actually went for 30k, because I believe that car was the one that went to England for 7000PDS (under 20k US) over Summer 73.
