The 245 Dino GT is a very cool looking car. I remember seeing one in the movie Cannonball Run 2. When there taking off from the starting point.
I have a friend of mine that use to have a 87 Toyota Supra with a Turbo. The car came with stick. Such an awesome car, too bad he got rid of it.
Wow this is really neat seeing where everyone started out at. To where they are now. Also with modern and old school cars as well.
I'll tell you my best car and it wasn't a performance car. I bought a Karmann Ghia to help a girl out. She needed money fast and sold her car cheap. My uncle restores classic Chevy's and has a paint booth at his house. Tossed a paint job on it. Plan was to flip it and triple my money. That car got so much Women attention, I drove it around for two years. So far best chick car ever. Gas stations to Seven Eleven, Women of all ages would say nice car. Put a for sale sign and they'd start looking and talking, etc. It was like cat nip for Women, 18 to over 30.
In 1975 bought a '62 Porsche 356B Super 90 bought while home on leave during a deployment for $1900. Wonderful little car.
Oh another performance car was a 72 240Z. My Dad bought it new in 72 and around 75 sold it to my uncle. I was 3 when he sold it and I cried. So when my uncle wanted to sell it, I had to buy it. Great cars. Excellent performance for the 70's era, it was up there with its contemporaries or faster. I loaned it to my younger brother who was 16 at the time. He put new wheels on it. He didn't torque them properly and one came off on the highway. Extensive frame damage and our insurance who also registers cars for the roads here, well they wrote the car off as unrepairable. Its now been recycled. I might buy a Z out of nostalgia, its just really tuff to find a good one.
Yep--an actual Holly 4 bbl, roller cam, Gatorback tires, real dual exhaust. IIRC was rated at 210hp, which was a jump from the prior years 175hp(?), and which accelerated like nothing I had ever experienced (up to the point, of course).
1979 Honda Prelude. First 5-SP that was truly mine and it was so easy to get parts/work on (meaning cheap when I f-n-cked something up and had to buy again.) Just a great little car all around that would never get me a ticket (then,) I could never overrev, and taught me how to drive and be free. She was wrecked by her new owner only a week after I let her go. Still get sad sometimes...
A 1980 Triumph TR8, bought in 1982. In 1985 I took it to Holland with me. And here it is with my 1982 Mondial (photo taken during the mid 90s). . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My Dad bought my grand mother a 88 prelude fully loaded 5spd. He got a smoking deal on it and it was a great car. In the 90's my younger brother took it over. Almost Ferrari related. Actually it was on a Rolls Royce, the dealer was also Ferrari at the time as well as having a Honda store. My Dad bought a spur and said they should through in a Honda. The salesmen spoke to the manager, guess he thought my Dad was serious. They didn't through in the prelude, but gave it to us wholesale. It was supposed to be for my older brother, but he wanted a Toyota 4X4. So he gave it to my grand mother.
69 Camaro, 307 small block, 2-speed Powerglide on the column. Then a '71 350 SS with a 4 speed Muncie rock crusher. Then a bunch of "practical" cars until I got a Cooper S in 2007. Then an M3, snd then the 456. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I had a crush on a platinum TR8 on the used car lot at Jaguar Cleveland back in junior high. But, no money to do anything about it. My first respectable "performance" car was a slightly used '85 VW GTI, 0-60 in a neck-snapping 9.0 seconds. My second car was an '81 Fiat X1/9.
Here's a pic of mine that last time I drove it (@VIR) - pressure plate cracked a few laps later and ended my weekend and my patience with the car... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great shot. And for the record anyone who says 308s are slow hasn't seen one outrace a Carnival cruise ship.
My first car was my first performance car it was a 71 javelin sst with a 360. I kept it for two whole weeks. There have been many in between then and now, the Javelin was back in 87. OP mentioned fox body mustangs those are great cars I have had four different iterations of them lots of fun too drive.
Had one of those too that was a big deal to me at the time I borrowed about 1500 to top off what I had saved and was working 2 jobs after school to pay for it I was a senior in high school at the time. It was a gold 78 with t-tops 400 4 speed could NOT kill that tranny IIRC it was a Muncie. Ended up doing up the motor a bit competition cam, edlebrock performer intake, holley 750 headers etc..etc
The later '70's cars came with the super t-10 which was a very tough trans. One thing I loved about that car is the ease with which you could get some serious performance out of it. Headers/intake/cam gave me around 100hp bump from the stock 220hp to around 320hp. Car went from 86mph in the 1/4 to 98mph in the 1/4 with just those 3 changes and some tuning - only cost around $350 at the time. In the mid 90's/early 2000's that was pretty decent performance and could hang with a new vette. I had rebuilt the suspension with polygraphite bushings, added a larger rear sway bar and 4 wheel discs from a '79 trans am, so it could stop and turn as well as it went in a straight line. Only thing is the car had pretty much zero feel to it - fairly numb steering and shifter.
