It was always billed as a 1 day test. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel estimated 2,000 people showed up.

Yeah, yesterday was just a test day with only a few teams participating. There will be another day coming up in the next 2 weeks but is closed to the public. This was obviously a publicity thing.

After I went through more of the track after I said about 1K were probably there in a previous post, I saw that most of the lots had many more cars in them. ...maybe 3-4 K? I wonder also what the number was. I can tell ya that the food line for the Gearbox was as long as it would be for any other major event! The weather was just perfect and the excitement & energy level in the place was through the roof.

    Thanks for the updates.

Thought that since they were making such a big "do" about the test that it would be
at least two or three days. You may always tell how long a test is going to be by the
amount of trailers Firestone brings full of tires.

In the CART days, the teams would test at Sebring practically from the day after the season
ended right up to the Homestead "Spring Training" sessions.

At one point, Sebring International Raceway reported that they made more income from
    CART testing than The Race.

Thanks for the Road America photos! Many of them, particularly the ones taken from a high up perspective, confirm the Indycars are barely open wheel anymore. And now they wish to have closed cockpits? Why doesn't Indycar just drink the hemlock? (And this is from a fan since 1968!)

a Honda (HPD) engineer working on the aero kits said that these cars are really prototypes with the front fenders missing. put a roof/canopy on them and they might as well just race P2 cars.

It's funny because when they were talking about these aero kits, I thought that they'd strip
them down to make them more slippery and here they went in completely the opposite direction.

I just don't see how people can get excited about these Aero Kit cars. They're absurd
looking and as a girlfriend noted while watching the Indy Car race at Mid-Ohio, "Why
don't they look cool like Formula One or the Le Mans cars?".

    Good question...

Perhaps its that its more than what the cars look like? ....the teams, owners, drivers, (blast shields up :)) technology, and the banner name of Indycar is what the attraction is.

A guy next to us was seeing :43's on his stopwatch in the early afternoon. I haven't seen anything official yet. I wonder how far into the :30's they'll get once they really dial the cars in for this place

Dario's track record from the good ol days of CART is a 39.8 so that's probably a good benchmark, maybe a bit faster.

And it doesn't all sound very good.

You know things are desperate when the writer states "The low long-term success
rate for these events underlines just how hard they are to pull off, and right now
we're still waiting to see whether the Boston promoter has the toolkit required to
make the race happen. If it doesn't, the series can no longer rely on having Andretti
Sports Marketing ride in at the eleventh hour to save the day."

And, just who is this "Boston promoter"? No quotes attributed to this shadowy entity.

Seems like more politics than racing. Just anothey way to use public funds for personal gain.

Same recipe different ingredients I suppose...

The organizers of the 2002-2003 Miami Grand Prix of the Americas leveraged $4M as a loan
from the City of Miami to put on the event(s) with a promise to repay in full.

While these were exciting events featuring ALMS and Champ Car on the same bill, there
were a lot of issues such as the course not being ready in time for the first scheduled
practice session, much of the track looking like a construction zone (a photographer
colleague cut his hand severely on some of the construction debris), etc. etc.

The event, as cool as it was, only lasted the two years and was drawn to a close after
local media exposed that the City had squandered $4M to the promoters which failed to
deliver any sort of ROI. And, of course, closing off major arteries of downtown Miami
didn't go down too well either.

The interesting aspect of this was, several years later perhaps around 2009 or 10, these
same promoters were making a run at having another downtown Miami Grand Prix with
the same M.O. of obtaining another loan from the City. This time, it didn't get very
    far.

If managed right, these street course events can be great (Long Beach and St. Petersburg
come to mind). But for the one or two success stories, there are a couple dozen equally
notorious failures and everyone comes away with a bad taste after promising to be the
    "next Monaco", or whatever.

This deal in Boston, as odd as it may seem, has Indy Car under the microscope perhaps
more than many of their other notorious debacles of late. The inclusion of this date raised
more than a few eyebrows and now things seem to be going off the rails just as the promoters
(whomever they are) are putting things into motion.

From the configuration of the cars, best guess that is from 1972.

Would have thought it was from 1977, Foyt's fourth victory, but that car was very
    different to this one.

that's Mears' helmet, and he beat Foyt at Indy in 1979, but not driving the #2 and the cars looked nothing like that. so some inaccurate info, or excessive creative license?

    no clue on the artist.

looks like he has some motorsports experience/connections from his time as a recruiting officer.

doesn't really matter, if Chip and Roger don't like him he's gone and if they do he'll get promoted :p
