I have recently become the proud father of a beautiful 1982 400i.

To legally drive in the UK, for those who do not know, you need an M.O.T certificate which proves road worthiness. A part of this test is having a rear fog light. My local M.O.T test centre aren't able to find this and nor am I (I found the front fog light), and are stating that I'll have to retrofit a clunky bolt on one to pass.

If I have to do this fine, however, I haven't seen another UK car with an extra fog lamp bolted on so assume they come as standard.

So my question is: does a 1982 400i have a rear fog light and if so where is the switch please?

Also does anyone know what the correct name for my paint is as well please.

    Many thanks
    Peter

Thats a lovely colour. The pictures look very familiar, but I cant place where I have seen it...

My car is currently being restored so please ignore the condition. Rear fog lights are in the bumper but your car does not have the recess.

    Hi Peter
Congrats, it's a lovely looking 400i. The colour is Azzurro Metallizzato, which is its original colour. You are probably aware that it was supplied to Jersey when new.

It would have had twin fog lamps attached to the rear bumper between the exhaust pipes (see photo). They were likely fitted by the UK importer rather than the factory. The second series 400i from late 1982 had the fog lights recessed into the bumper. A few first series 400i and even carburettor cars also have fog lights in the bumper in the style of the second series cars (like Modificata's) - I presume these were retrofitted in the 1980s.

I have an idea that there was a switch to the right of the steering column, but not certain about that.

The switch on both my 1980 Auto and 1981 Manual are on the wooden console, one of the unmarked ones. Took me a while to find it at first, but had to, as I am also in the UK and these are Uk-suppied cars. I think initially it was intended to activate the radio antenna on the earlier models, but then Ferrari had the idea of using it for Fog lamps when the antenna became automatically activated. I'll have a look around to see which one it is next time I visit the cars. Congratulations. These cars are underrated gems!

Hi! Congratulations. On both my 1981 Manual and 1981 Auto 400i, the switch is on the wooden console, one of the unmarked flip-switches. I think the owners manual identifies it as the antenna switch, but on the UK-supplied cars the switch worked the rear fog lamps as the antenna was automatically actuated. I had to find out for the same reason you did, the dreaded MOT test. Have fun with your beast! Cheers. Eric

Thank you all, that is extremely helpful. Out of interest how did you know this was originally a Jersey car? I have good history and all the original documents so did know that it was as well.

The eagle eyed may have noticed v12 badges on the wings - these are from a merc and have now been taken off. I know it shouldn't have the Scuderia badges on the wings either, and to be honest they are really tatty, but I can't help but like the look of them against the nice 'Azzurro Metallizzato' colour so they stay at least for a while.

It's currently having a suspension rebuild, aircon, brakes, windscreen wiper motor and a few other bits with a good local garage before going into a specialist near me (Peter Higgins Sports Cars) for a thorough check.

I'd love to be able to start doing some work on it myself and am rewatching episodes of trusty 'Wheeler Dealer' like it's a crash course in fixing old cars....

Any tips on what to be looking out for, sensitive performance mods and so on for a car which has been inactive for a good few years would be greatly appreciated.

I have a UK RHD 400i from 1980 and there's no sign of any rear fog lights - and it's always passed its MOT. Strange! Either that or, unbeknown to me, one of the standard round rear lights gets brighter when the mist thickens!

    Hi Ewan,
There's a simple reason for this. It is mandatory in the UK for vehicles that have been brought into use from April 1980 to have a rear fog light - and your 400 was first registered in November 1979 and is therefore exempt from the requirement.

Thank you for the explanation about my lack of fog light. I've learned something new today!
