Hello all, wasn't sure if this was the right place to put this so please feel free to move if not. My wife and I are making a road trip to Barrie this summer (most likely coinciding with the Toronto IndyCar race). Barrie came up as my wife had an interest in going to Toronto as well as seeing Niagra Falls. While I know this is north of Toronto, it was within our timeshare network and so the decision was made.

Looking for tips on things to see, places to go/eat, etc. Any help you could provide would be appreciated! Thank you.

There's lots to see and do in Southern Ontario. What are your interests? Look up Red Leaves in Muskoka and the Westin in Collingwood as a start. They are both 2hrs from Toronto.

Visit Newman, he's in Barrie. ;-) Stop by Legendary in Milton half hour before Toronto on your way.

One of the place to visit in TO is the Casaloma Castle.

You may have trouble getting in to see him. You have to get past the guard dog and the car wrecks in the long grass!! There's always something at Paul's.

I live in Barrie and it is a super place in the summertime.

Kempenfelt Bay boat cruises. Exotic car experiences. Autocross events. Two local speedways. Exotic car restoration shops. MacLaren Art Gallery. The Maddy Centre For The Arts. Organized walking tours. Centennial Beach. Almost every summer weekend has a major festival of some sort along the lakefront. Flying Monkey Brewery tours and tasting.
There are all kinds of dining experiences available for all tastes and price points. Events at the college/university. Kayak rentals. Business events. House tours. Wonderful downtown shopping with unique shops, and also a big mall etc.

If venturing out from Barrie as your base there are many more opportunities to discover cool things.

PM me details of your time in Barrie and what kind of things you are interested in, and I will compile suggestions. Perhaps my wife and I could meet you, and while the ladies talk, I could offer you some memorable driving experiences.

I lived near Toronto for 6 years (Mississauga) but rarely ventured outside of GTA. Led a pretty boring existence. One thing I do miss is California sandwiches, several locations in the GTA, but the best one is on Claremont St, near downtown Toronto. Warning its sort of a bad neighborhood.

Why are you never in Barrie when I am there? I am heading back north late next week. Please melt the snow before I return home.

I'll get my shovel and will be here next week. We can get together I should be sending a msg to Mr. Bailey shortly as well! :)

Now back to the topic, I would gladly help you out and its kind of funny as I spent almost half of 2014 in Milwaukee! Have given lots of tours for Toronto and went to school in Barrie so I know both well. Niagara falls can be VERY cheap if you book weekday so I can help you do that as well.

Barrie is nice but most of the nice stuff is around it really with the lakes, beaches, and hills.

Really? :) I don't think you know it too well. It may have been a tough neighborhood in the past but you just needed to be street smart. Now you need a million bucks plus to buy a "shack" ;)

But yes the sandwiches are great. That is the first and original location...

Queen's on Dunlop St. E near Memorial Square for a decent pub experience. They also have a nightclub attached that opens at 10PM if that is more your style. The fajitas at Lone Star Texas Grill just off Mapleview Dr. at the 400 are my personal favorites.

Lots to do on Lake Simcoe. Casino Rama (take 11 North to Atherley Rd. East to 44 North) for a change of pace. To the Northwest of Barrie is Wasaga Beach, should be some pretty good scenery there by the time you go.

If you go to the CN Tower while in Toronto have dinner at 360 (make reservations at least a couple of weeks in advance). The lift tickets are included in the price of the meal and you bypass the lineup and take a dedicated elevator up to the restaurant. Try to book a time where you go up just before sunset so you can also catch the views with the city lit up at night.

Yeah- I don't think you've been to the western part of downtown for a while. California Sandwiches wasn't in a bad area even 10 years ago. This area- just north of Trinity Bellwoods Park- is now one of the most desirable areas in the city.

Thad if you are looking for things to do in Toronto itself, feel free to PM me; it sounds like you've gotten lots of great suggestions for Barrie and the surrounding area.
