Saw it yesterday.. am in love This is an amazing piece of history.. Its a beauty as is, dirty and worn, but an amazing opportunity to see an original car that isn't over-restaured or pampered. In its present state the lines and design are phenomenal. Some things are difficult to see on a shiny body I hope the new owner will preserve the appaerance as is, it would be a shame to restaure it to something shiny and new.. Make it drivable and save as much patina and character as is. If i could afford it, i'd keep it exactly as is and build a huge showcase for my livingroom... Unfortunately, my livingroom isn't big enough.. ;-) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Meanwhile, Alain Delon is angry about Artcurial: To sum-up: "they use my name without any shame, this just to artificially inflate the auction's price of a car that has belonged to me only for two years from 1963 to 1965; they did not even had the courtesy to ask me anything about the words they wrote about me, and furthermore, the car they are selling is not the one I was pictured in with Jane Fonda for the well known pictures (it was another 250 California); and they use a picture of Jane and me in the other California on the cover of the catalogue; I want expressly my name not to be associated with anything related to this sale..." Alain Delon en colère de l'utilisation de son nom dans une vente aux enchères So much for "Alain Delon's California..."; but it is sold now, so... Rgds
Bidders are really crazy ! The California is a very beautiful car but to that price ? and above all to completely restore ! .... Only because in the past Alain Delon was one of its owners ?
So Alain Delon claims he indeed owned the car as whereas Marcel Massini earlier stated that he did not? Funny.
I understand one can get confused when exposed as prior owner to something that just sold for gigabucks. The claim that the car in Fonda photos would be a different one is quite funny though. How many dark, late style, closed headlight Californias were there equipped with Snaps? If I was forced to make a guess, I would say one.
I agree that this California is beatiful in its present state. But Id like to know what should be the cost of a perfect restoration for a car like this one (I suppose at Ferrari Classiche or at great specialists). Thanks for your replies
I've heard of megabucks... now gigabucks.... what's next? It looks like the same car with Jane to me. Why would the actor would mind using his name, if he owned it? Are there more unrestored 250 SWB California(s) to be found in the world? I really like this car.
From what I have been told recently, the restoration of this car will be from $500,000. To $1 million. This is if you want a top restorer to do it to Pebble Beach quality. Ken Goldman
Does anybody check the central console on 2935GT ?? Are there any screw holes for the clock ?? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry but common sense tells us the restoration of this car is not materially different from the restoration of a PF series 2 cabriolet. Unless you find a shop that bills hours proportionally to purchase price,,,then you are a Russian oligarch only happy if you have the most expensive restoration in the world on top of the most expensive Cal spyder....
What are the differences between an early and late one in apearance? I know the differences in the interiour and the shape of the "hips" behind the doors are a bit different. Also the shape of the front grill is a bit different, but it seems, that nearly every car is unique here...
Yes, and gear selector leather "boot" has also been replaced. The rear view mirror also seems to be a different size, or is it just the angle?
Several interior details. It is very very difficult to be sure of external changes as so many cars have been repaired/modified after completion; they are over 50 year old cars after all. All this also increases the value of the Delon spider; as we have photographic evidence from day one, there is no room for specualtion if it was really modified or converted in some point of its life.
