Ran in to this movie on the Dutch Autoblog site which is about an New Zealand* guy who makes beautiful replicas of, for example, the Ferrari 250 GTO. Didn't want to keep the movie just for myself, so hereby the URL: 1962 Ferarri GTO Replica video » Autojunk.nl (133913)

Not a true 250 GTO however the work is stunning to see.

I saw that and it is impressive but one can't help but wonder if you have all that skill, time, and money to build a replica why not create an original?

I'm always blown away by these builds but ultimately I think their talent would be better served by creating their own masterpiece rather than copying someone else's. Maybe their own modern take on these classic design? Maybe their own futuristic concept?

What about the ethical questions surrounding creation of a trademarked vehicle and then badging it with Ferrari badges? Don't get me wrong, this is very impressive but it's not a Ferrari, technically. What would Maranello think about this? Maybe if it's only for personal use and not for resale...

With badges that's a reasonable point since it's a current commercial trademark..

What "rights" exist for a 60+ year old car design? Genuine question..

This line must have been crossed hundreds of times over the years to be well established what Maranello can/doesn't do.

1 car every 4 years as well doesn't amount to much of a commercial threat to anyone.

Also genuine 250 buyers wouldn't buy one.. and that leaves everyone else and who also wouldn't be in the market to be able to buy a genuine one anyway.. so nett result is no affect on Maranello at all?

I Totally Agree, However very high quality replicas will sell for far more money than modern interpretations, The Kiwi's have been doing this for quite some time and they do a spectacularly good job of it.
Here is one they made earlier.

    Amazing!!

I wonder what engines/gearbox they use and what instruments they installed.

From what I saw they were using parts from the 400 series Ferraris (which would be the cheapest alternative)..

    Does anyone know?

    Agree.

He used to make, or maybe still does, Jaguar replicas ... pity he is now destroying real Ferraris for their engines. There is a lot of skill in New Zealand, wish it was not used for replicas but restorations.

I had a chat with these guys some years ago, I think it would be fair to say that they are not very accurate replicas with a lot of details that are wrong. They are/were a lot cheaper than the higher quality replica makers on the flip side. My old mechanic had seen a few of them up close and worked on them, his comment was that the bodies were very well made but that the chassis that he saw was pretty 'beefy'. A friend of a friend had some cars (P4 replica) made by Tempero and was pretty happy with them. I can find out more if anyone is interested.

With today's CNC capabilities, any engine block, crankshaft, heads, camshaft can be reproduced.

I believe there is in fact a company in the UK doing this.

But I assume they are not doing this and infact wrecker original Ferraris.

There was a thread on this site trying to save 3 genuine Ferraris that were destined for replicas in NZ ... no idea if they were for this company though.

I am ashamed to be a NZ'er when I see this stuff. Brilliant workmanship (of course) but ...

Lets hope this is the case, but as the main selling point for these cars being they are cheaper replicas ... who knows?

Yes, but I guess it is all relative - what is "cheaper"? 100K less, 200K, 300K?

Does anyone know what the go for?
