I sure could use some help. The Mrs. and I will be in New York over a weekend in December. The plan is to fly into Newark and grab the train, then a little sightseeing on Saturday, a Broadway show Saturday night, Sunday just a relaxing day seeing the sights, a nice dinner Sunday night, head for home Monday afternoon.
Sure the Ritz, Plaza, or Pierre would be nice but at $900 to $1,400 a night I don't think so. We just need a nice clean place to check in and crash that isn't out in the boonies. Someone told me about the Carlton Hotel on Madison Ave near 29th which I can get pretty cheap for New York ($290).

Can some of you suggest some other ones you like? I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Do you want to be near Times Square or somewhere else?

My company's office is near Grand Central Station and I often stay at the Grand Hyatt which is next door. Large hotel with nice modern rooms and a decent amount of space (for NYC). Only issue for you may be taking the train to Penn Station and being across town which is either a very long walk or a short taxi ride.

The Times Square hotels tend to be a bit more tired in my experience due to very high occupancy rates.

Personally, I like the Conrad downtown.

Not expensive for New York and I don't mind going out of the way for a decent room.

You may want to check out the W on Lexington Ave. Pretty central location.

I've also heard that Dream NYC near Time Square is OK .

Just me though! Enjoy yourself in the Big Apple!

We've stayed at the 6 Columbus hotel. On Columbus circle, close to subway and central park. It was reasonably priced (though very small rooms). It's been about 2 years since we stayed last, but hope to do it again soon.

Well to be honest; "I don't know." I'm trying to figure out if we should stay somewhere in the 30's so we are centrally located or if we should stay farther north closer to the park. That's why I'm asking all you guys.
    (and thanks for the replies)

I like the Waldorf Astoria because it splits the distance. Although I also like arriving by train, so being near Grand Central Station helps, too.

Some great shopping is right between the Waldorf and the Park.

And it's a lovely old hotel.

I haven't been in there but it is a great location. Although if you are in Manhattan eating at the hotel just seems wrong. That extra $100 in food credit can buy you a good burger in Midtown.

I have stayed at the New York Yacht Club, an historic property. I think my room was less than $100 per night, 15 years ago. They also gave me a guest pass to the Harvard Club for dining (my clients enjoyed the invites).

If you belong to a member yacht club with reciprocal guest privileges it's a great deal.

I've also used my yacht club membership to access the St George's Dinghy Club in Bermuda, St Francis in SFO, Vancouver, several in FL, Monaco, etc.

Check out The Royalton. Its a boutique hotel located within walking distance of Times Square, Broadway shows and restaurant row. Has nice bar downstairs, fireplaces in the room. Very nice but not overboard.

I think that I had a business breakfast or investor meeting at the London Hotel not too long ago and I thought it was reasonably conveniently located in upper Midtown west (54th between 6th & 7th) and I had a good impression of it.

Places like the Soho Grand are nice but are downtown and may not be that convenient if you are spending most of your time up around the theater district in Midtown.

There are so many places and, being December, price and availability might be all over the place so maybe a search for some candidates and request for opinions would work best. Unless you have chosen one of the places suggested already.

New York is great in the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, although unbelievably crowded. What weekend will you be there?

The restaurant in the London Hotel is a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. They have a chefs table for 9-8 on a (cooled) platform inside the kitchen, and you are served the food by each sous chef that makes your dish. Very much in control. No yelling Very recommended. The day before Ramsey met with our people, but the night we were there with clients, he wasn't there.
