I have a car that was last registered back in 1997 (17 years ago) I had a plan to restore this car and I know it's going to take me years to complete the restoration so I went to the DMV and registered it as a None operative vehicle so I don have to pay for the registration while she is down. Anyway, it took longer than I thought, and I just now getting around into finishing the restoration and should be done in a month. Few days ago, I went down to the DMV and ask if I can register the car now and how much. The clerk said yes I can register it and it's going to be $799. I told them I registered it as none op. but the DMV doesn't have any record of it. It has been so long that I don't have the papers from the DMV anymore. What should I do? Please advise, thank you.

Register it out of state or get whole sale dealer plates (cheaper than $799). Also try a private DMV service as the wonderful people at the DMV have to pass a stupidity test to work there

Thanks Jay. Do you know any Private DMV? I actually plan to register it in NV since the car is there right now at my brothers house.

Mike, Nevada is a great idea and I don't think you need smog there either! You really can't lose! I have a dmv guy; but he's in canoga park. You can pm me and I'll send his info. Although with a Nevada title, you can always re register the car in ca and not have to pay the penalties, back fees, etc

When I was in my Alfa GTV phase, I had a Spider that ran but was going to pull parts from Bought it not running, got it to run after taking what I wanted and decided to sell it. Sold it and went to DMV with the buyer. I explained to the DMV lady that it was a non-running junk parts car and they waived the past fees. He just paid the tax and registration fee. Try that...

Call DMV in Sacramento complain about it, I hope you kept something on the paperwork. but if its been that long ago its been out of the system. after 6 years it gets kicked out of the system.

If you have AAA go through them. It's very fast and convenient. You can do just about everything except renew your actual license with picture.

Someone mentioned AAA. Good choice. Also every car dealer either has a DMV person on staff or hires a service. Call a car sales guy or two and ask for names. If you are close to a dealer ask if you can just slip it into the pile.

If Nevada is available probably best choice.

That explains a lot. I always wondered.

Is it the same test for running for California office?

Non op fees have to be paid every year, so just show them proof of your payments to the DMV.

As mentioned above, you pay non-op fees every year just like a regular registration, but of course at a much lower rate. So, if you haven't paid for 16 years then you owe 16 years of non-op fees...

Ain't it just like Kalifornia to make you pay for not driving your car?

Makes me wonder how much we are going to pay this year for not using water.

You gotta love the logic of government.

Since when ? Sure registration each year but non op is a 1 time fee and then you can park it.

Actually, this is correct. My other confirmation was INCORRECT! What you get every year is the registration renewal should you decide to put it back on the road, but nothing is due if you want to key it off the road.

    Sorry, this was incorrect - 16 years of non-op fees = 0$ :) Yearly non-op renewal is 0$.

Sorry, I've never done a non op, it was my understanding that it was a yearly fee, but apparently it's just a one time filing fee.

Mike, I had a similar situation about 5 years ago with a work truck that was non op. for 10 plus years. I believe we had to sign an affidavit that they supplied at the DMV confirming that the truck had not been used on the road since its last registration was paid and they accepted that as fact. No fees due. Hopefully this policy is still in place. I think AAA would be the best place to do this.
