Max great post, it is always a pleasure to see you go for it such as when you passed four well driven cars in one go n the Dunlop chicane in it during Le Mans Classic 2008 practice;-).

George that is a fine apology in a world where such a thing is increasingly rare, bravo, enjoy my book:).

One of my favourite moments at Le Mans Classic this year was to meet the son of the current owner of the Breadvan at 1am in the pits as he got out of the car after his first run in it at Le Mans and he was happy beyond words:) See my LMC article in the current issue of Ferrari Market Letter.

John thanks again for your fabulous event to which you invited me 2000-2002, my first drive in the Breadvan was in the middle of nowhere near Napoleonville Louisiana with Monte, huge sugarcane trucks going the other way dropping some of it off on us, the back end of the car jumping a foot over a bump, the feeling I was driving the devil’s own chariot, some of the locals almost crossing themselves when they saw it go by.
Driving 0808 with Jim Spiro was also very special but the whole event was fantastic: the police escorted high speed rides through the bayou (did I really see 170mph riding with Jim in his F50 BEHIND a state trooper;-)?! Giving a ride to the stunning glamorous Miss New Orleans complete with her ribbon in “Don” Franco’s 360 was one of those moments, Eric van de Poele doing doughnuts in the trooper’s car in front of the plantation...with the Trooper...hours after he gave him a ride in a 360 on track that turned the trooper green...and all that can’t be written:) Please say hello to Monte and Franco!

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Dear Tongascrew,

thanks a lot for your apologies which I accept. I know that times have changed and driving styles as well. There are a few young people out there racing at Le Mans, who have never driven a racing car with manual shift in their life...
As I drive a lot of different car, I can tell that they all require a slightly different technique...
    So its all adapting...

    Best,

    Max

The caption says Schrecksekunde, so I hope it means that it was extinguished quickly. does it have an automatic system onboard?

    Hello John, all:

I communicated with the (new) owner of the car and it was not at all as dramatic as the flash fire you see here would have you believe. He did get his eyebrows singed and was lucky to wear glasses.
The rear window buckled and the liner material on the ceiling went but they raced the car the next day with his son driving and finished the race.

I do believe that he decided to get more qualified people to take care of the car after this.

    Best regards,

    Marc

My big worry has always been that it would back hard into a wall since the rear of the car is very intricate and I suggested to the owner that it should be 3D scanned, he said that it had been done for a model manufacturer (not sure which) and that he would ask for the data.

The nose was of course very well redone in Holland during the early years of the Werner stewardship.

    Best regards,

    Marc

There was a rumour at Le Mans Classic that there is a second Breadvan which is used for racing while the one and only is kept at home. Where is this crazy thing coming from? Anyone heard or knows something about this?

In this crazy classic car world everything is possible :)
I would not be surprised as there are more replicas out there that did Le Mans Classic and nobody knew.....well..some did

Monteverde owns the LM winning Porker 917K but races the Piper built replica he also owns so it doesn't matter if it gets dinged

    - race replica's
    - have pseudo races which are more demonstrations
    - race the real thing and destroy original cars

All three have upside's and downside's but modern safety equipment will make racing the real thing even more of a tragedy. I say race replica's that look and sound and go the same and everyone's happy. What does anyone else think.

Sorry I don't agree with the racing of replicas. What I do agree with is not racing these old cars at 10/10ths ... why do they do this?, there is nothing to gain and everything to loose. And the spectators will be just as happy with a 7/10ths race.

The problem with using replicas is that is destroys all the other cars for the components. If Ferrari produced brand new cars for this replica race, then yes why not, but they won't so genuine cars will be raped for the parts.

Also these REAL race cars can never be destroyed. Even if the Breadvan burnt to the ground it would be restored and racing again. Sure some of the history would be lost, but the for example the nose is not original anymore and with most of the old race cars, very little of them are original. My point the value of these cars is MORE than the cost to fully restore them, considerably more.

In the end the drivers/owners pretending that classic/historic racing is real and should be hard is the problem. They need to mature somewhat and leave the egos at home!

Different strokes/ folks and all that. I definitely agree that those that want to properly race should try any of the modern formulae and leave the historic's to those that love and respect the cars. Steve Earle used to run the Monterey historics and had a policy that anyone that caused trouble, including Stirling Moss one year, would not be allowed to drive the following. No matter who they were or how much money they had.

Go back in this thread to #47, then go on to #72 and continue. I got involved in this discussion. Just compare the driving of Sterling Moss in that Ford Cortina to Max Werner in the Breadvan. I will leave the rest up to you. By the way #79 is a Lotus but I can see the confusion. tonga's crew

Someone who has a big ego must not automatically be a good or very good driver! So what was meant: someone who thinks that the Universe is turning around him and -for example- his GTO or a different person who is a very good driver in such a car? Two different cups of coffee here...

    Ciao!

    Good driver!
I can`t see a mistake he made. The mistake was done by the Jaguar who was going to overtake another car and clearly saw this very fast Porsche coming...
