Radar detection has been discussed on this board many times - but does anyone know if there is a radar detector available that will tell you if there is a helicopter in the sky around you ?

Im sure that the technology has existed for decades - but has anyone put it to use for automotive purposes ?

I was thinking about this because Im seeing more and more news stories of police helicopters ( likely being purchased by police departments from the proceeds of impounded vehicles from alleged speeding infractions)

Roadside impoundments at the discretion of the police officer are legal where I live in British Columbia, Canada for as little as 40-50 km/h over the limit (about 25-30mph over the limit) as well as in other provinces. Impoundments probably take place in many US states also.

So has anyone seen these helicopter detectors for sale anywhere ?

If not - it's a great business idea...

Haven't seen it - 40kmh over limit mandatory impounding and 28 day loss of licence here.

You may want to look at Valentines radar detector. I am not sure but they may do that. They have many advanced features. I have an older model even it points to where the radar is coming from. The device evens tells you how many radars are checking you. The device checks the three frequencies and laser. It does not help much on the new instant on radar, but if he checks a car ahead of you , a warning signal is given.

    Good luck

V1 doesn't have that capability and I don't think any other detector does either.
A buddy of mine borrowed my V1 about 10 years ago and without any notice got a ticket. The officer said they used aircraft to track them.

Good to know that. My Valentine is about the same vintage

I would at least call them to ask the question. Mine is the early V1 who knows they may be selling V12 by now.

    Never hurts to ask.

Helicopters monitor speeds of vehicles below them by measuring distance travelled over time, not radar. To spot a helicopter using a device, you'll need a radar antenna, not a detector. :p

I agree with Lee to contact V1, they are experts with the current technology, especially what police use these days, as it continues to evolve with many new guns.

Personal experience: About 10 years ago with my V1, I got pulled over with LIDAR in the air. There was a fixed winged plane flying near a private airport timing vehicles crossing two horizontal lines painted on the motorway, guess about 500' from each other. A measured distance over time travelled. My V1 provided an alert. I was in a train of other cars, but they apparently only hit me. I think because it is LIDAR, like RADAR, if the car ahead of you that gets hit first, and you're the second car, then slow down, you should be OK with a V1 or another type of non jamming detector.

Not possible in the us. If you're that concerned about tickets, get a police scanner since the planes and helicopters have to talk to ground units. Otherwise a good attorney on retainer can get you out of almost any ticket..

A good attorney on retainer costs quite a bit more than a few tickets per year (unless driving like an ***** and getting a few impounds :)

But seriously, if you are arming yourself to do battle with police helicopters, you are either doing it wrong or at least choosing the wrong road to have your fun on.

Unfortunately, there's no right roads left since they brought in the draconian roadside confiscations at the whim of the officer.

there is no way for that. They use markings on the road to find out how much time it took for u to get from 1 to the next. Then Distance/Time=Speed.

    Maybe using a police scanner???

Here in NSW, Australia all radar detectors are illegal to possess, let alone use. If you are caught with one you instantly lose 9 points off your driver's licence (12 points and you lose your licence altogether). You are also fined about $1,400 and the device is confiscated. It ends up being a bad day!

True, although it was referring to the laws around roadside confiscation of your speeding car by police.

Ah, yes, the "hoon" laws that give police the ability to seize cars immediately if they are more than 45km/h over the limit...

When you see a big white strip in the road that is a tell tale sign they use aircraft for speed control....usually a half or quarter mile....

How does it work in BC if the car is "leased" or "Rented" they certainly can not impound and sell a leased or rented car....so your next step is to have your trusty cousin start a luxury leasing company, problem solved.

I meant with the intention of you never seeing it again or paying major fines, they couldnt take the car and auction it.

Lots of posts incorrect information in this topic.

Planes use stop watches. They time you between 2 points on the road, from there they detect your speed. They can also pull you over on suspicion based on your speed relative to other vehicles on the road. I highly suggest keeping an eye to the sky if you are going to speed excessively. The planes are very easy to spot.

Lidar is laser radar. An officer must use lidar from a fixed position. Basically, a cop must be standing on the side of the road and point his laser at you. This is he only way that lidar traffic enforcement works.

Keep your eyes ahead and look for anomalies on the road or on the side of the road.

A v1 and the escort 9300ci with the iPhone app work great. Ultimately, nothing works better than keeping your eyes open and knowing your surroundings.
