Hey I'm always one of the guys writing that if a guy has always wanted a 355.. Then that is the car he should get. I don't try to tell people they should go with a post-2000 car in lieu of it... I can respect the desire... :)

Perhaps those who buy 348s are not afraid to enjoy them by driving? Whenever I see a 348 (admittedly not very often) it seems to be driven with gusto, while the 355s I've seen (admittedly also not very many) have all been sedately driven. The 355 looks more likely to achieve classic status, given that journalists praised it so highly and LdM frequently bashes the 348 in order to champion the 355 and promote himself - so perhaps this potential for an uptick makes the 355 more of a marketable investment? Though that doesn't stop me from preferring the 348, and I realise cars are crazy investment propositions.

If priced the same, I would still want a 348 over a 355. Fortunately, I appear to have fallen in love with the one bearing the lower entry price of the two - which will help get me into my dream Ferrari a little bit quicker. :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I would not consider any car as investment. Even if you look at the F cars with stratispheric prices, if you follow the price history in most cases there are better investments. The guy who buys a GTO for $8 million and flips it 5 years later for $10 probably did a lot better elsewhere. That $2 million gross profit is only a 4.5% anual return on investment, pretty poor. I have US saving bonds paying 5%. And don't forget all the carrying costs. We all buy these cars for the enjoyment of owning and driving them, whether with gusto or just a Sunday drive with the wife.

Well, there are 348 die hards and then there's everyone else. Based on a few polls on the subject in the general discussion area, it's about an 1:8 ratio of 348 die hards to everyone else (ie that prefer the 355).

History is not in favor of the 348 value wise for the simple fact that the later improved model is worth more in almost every case with Ferraris. See 206 Dino vs. 246 Dino, 308 vs. 328, testarossa vs. 512TR vs 512M, 550 vs 575, etc. etc. The only exception is the 365 GT4 BB vs. 512BB at this point and the 512BB is on a strong updward trajectory.

If you think the 348 is going to buck the trend somehow, I think that's great, but I certainly wouldn't put any money on it. The fact is that the 365 gt4 BB has been worth more than the 512BB for decades and if the 348 were to follow that trend, it would have already passed the 355. If you like the 348, buy it because you like it. If you buy it for any other reason than that, you're going to be disappointed. The same goes for the 355.

High values are nice and all but what do you buy a car for? 348 people want a Ferrari they can drive like a Ferrari. You can redline a 348 all day long and tomorrow and forever and the car loves it. Rarely is that the case with 355 people who bought the 355 enamored with the beautiful lines and what everybody else thinks about the car. When it comes to 355's, I hear terms like. I drive the car "respectfully." To me that's code for "not that often" and "under redline".

Drive it respectfully? Never heard that one before! I beat my 355 like a rented mule (although I do maintain it to high standards). I get that there is a loyal cadre of 348 owners on this board and y'all should be proud of how much you help each other (the brotherhood and all that). However, going out of your way to belittle the 355 smacks of a high degree of defensiveness. Maybe it's residual sensitivity around the history of Luca's comments etc. Beating on the 355 and propagating silly comments like "355 owners don't drive their cars as hard" and the ubiquitous "hair gel" comment won't increase the value of your 348's! The market speaks and the sad truth is that the market values 355 's higher. They are both great cars that each have their unique positives and negatives.

Ok it's time to go fix my hair :)

What do you think about a guy who drives his 348 in the Chicago winters? This just showed up, I spoke with him, he bought it 8 months ago. He drives it at least once a week. Look at the pictures....it's got salt on it! I don't get that. But I want to at least look at it.

He said he has no maintenance history on it. Has 40K miles, he said the dealer told him the last TB change was 30K miles....who knows how many years ago that was!

That's good. There are a few of you.

Then there are others...I can't tell who is prettier the car or the owner.

Why not? None of these cars cost more than a new, loaded Ford Expedition.

Funny thing , when one of our customer cars is sitting in the shop next to my 348 ( both red, both spiders and both tan interiors) and people come and go during the business day , and I'm not making this up , i really don't care , but 9 out of 10 people point to my 348 and say " i like that one better" . they don't care that the 355 has more hp , higher redline , and are generally not ferrari people who don't know the mechanical differences.

The 348 was criticized for its styling when it was introduced for being to much like the dated tr. For me, the strakes look goofy on the flat sided tr , the 348 took the look , refined it and made it look spectacular. When my customers see the cars side by side and say they like the 348 better they usually say its because they like the styling of the side strakes . so go figure , just posting the way i see it from experience with them both.

Those aren't the people that buy these cars and determine the value, are they?

Put your stock wheels back on and see how many people prefer your car...

Why, stock 348 wheels looks good on other models . He made a good choice. Strikes gives the car character .

btw ,talk about tasteless , tacky white wheels on a yellow car , are you 16 years old?

I'm sure 9 out of 10 prefer the 348 to the 355. Makes you wonder why the 355 sells for more, what a rip off.

Yeah, sure, I'm 16. Those aren't challenge wheels with my autox tires on them or anything, I just bought them because they're pretty and white - and tacky, yes, I love tacky (but why don't I like the 348 strakes then?). Because being a 355 owner (imagine that, at 16! Thanks, dad!) I never drive my car hard, I'm just a poser. I should throw out those Hoosier R6's that are on them now, because lets face it I'm just going to look at it in the garage and not ever take it to the track. Well, not again, that last time was just a fluke, I'm really just in it for the image. Completely unlike the guy that puts his car on display and asks people which car they like better, that guy is a real enthusiast.

never once "ask" anybody . just my observation of the comments people make when they see the two side by side.

autox , challenge ,r6's. talk about a name dropping poser , sit back and read your pretentious egotistical post. blah blah blah . shouldn't you be getting your valve guides replaced or somthing

So you personally attack me and I'm the *****? Ok. Tell you what, lets meet up at a track of your choosing, see which car is faster out there (and which car does or doesn't break down), and then take them to your local cruise-in (or your shop if you want) and see what comments we hear. I'd be interested to see who the poser ***** is here. Maybe it's me, maybe not.

I'm know plenty of people prefer the 348 over the 355. But I'm equally sure 9 out of 10 don't (in either direction).

It's not a wonder at all. The same reason the 360 sells for more than the 355.

You have some good arguments, but clearly these two not are among them.

Who cares who's car is faster?

If a 348 breaks down, does that mean that all 348's will break down at the same time from the same issue?

Like i said, the customers who walk in the garage and simply look at the two cars, they point to the 348, nothing to do with speed and so on,really no lie , i've only heard few like the 355 more. I'm not asking them for their opinion , its just the talk i over hear when i'm out there and the two cars are there at the same time

Not in England and Australia according to posters that live there. 355's have become more expensive than 360's. Don't think it will happen here (at least in the near future) but interesting phenomenon nonetheless.
