Last week had my car(07'430 berlinetta 6sp stick,12500mi) in for 4 wheel alignment because of uneven tire wear and when I went to pick it up my mechanic asked " has it always vibrated this much-there's alot of vibration coming from the engine bay" I said yes but I have only owned the car for 8months and since I had it nothing feels different.
He recommended changing the motor mounts and I said do the tranmission mount too.

Tremendous difference at low speeds! I drive the car everyday so there's lots of stop and go and speeds between 20-50mph- the car now is 100% smoother-significantly less vibration felt in the cabin when coming to stop- much more enjoyable around town.
Once you get on the highway it makes no difference because above 60mph there is so much noise and everything is vibrating .
It makes me wonder what these cars must have felt like when brand new-one day maybe??

I also have the front end clicking sound when going over bumps slowly-he said it's the ball joints but would not do anything about it right now-but it drives me nutts!!
What it must have been like new?????

Just curious, was it expensive to change out the mounts? I guess asking a question if repairs on a Ferrari were expensive is somewhat ridiculous.

Anyway, any info would be appreciated.

    thanks

Did he give you the old mounts? What did they look like?

What was your mechanic thinking about not replacing the ball joint before the alignment? Nuts!

No, this is one repair that isn't *too* expensive. I think the mounts are like $400 and labor is a couple of hours. Probably still overpriced and crazy that it needs to be done so often (when was the last time you changed motor mounts in any normal car?).

I had mine replaced last year, and the car shifts so much smoother. Motor mounts only, didn't do the transmission mounts. Old rubber mounts were ripped up and wobbly. New ones have a slightly improved design, I'm told.

I need a clutch next year so I will wait for the transmission mount until then but yesterday I picked up my car with new motor mounts, its so much smoother at idle. I used to feel the motor while sitting at lights, not anymore. My motor mounts came out in 2 pieces, they were shot.

    motor mounts $357x2
    transmission mount $369
    labor $900
so $1k in parts, and about same in labor

wheel alignment was needed because of my back 2 rear tires were wearing so uneven, these are new tires with 4500miles put on in 6months, the fronts were wearing perfectly even so their geometry is not being altered by ball joint noise.

the 430 motor mounts are a metal/rubber/rubber /metal sandwich and my rubber components were just flattened. You could see them easily if you pull the rear wheels off and there was a noticable difference in height of the rubber components of old versus new.

The idle is amazing smoother in the cabin especially after the engine warms up and everything settles down out back. This car use to beat me up with stop and go driving in the city, now its fun and easier to shift and remember I am pushing down alot with my left foot in the city with a standard tranny.

Two motor mounts and a transmission bushing cost around four hundred fifty bucks (total) depending on where you live and where you shop.

I don't have much heartburn with the labor charge, but I really hate the way some dealers will double or triple the retail price of parts he installs when he already makes a tidy profit selling these same parts over the counter.

Of course this may not be the case with your dealer. Perhaps he doubles or triples the price of the parts he sells at his parts counter so that they match your repair invoice. But, you get the idea; two motor mounts and a transmission mount are not really worth a thousand bucks.

When you look at the parallel universe that the major suppliers (dealers, Ricambi etc)
work in I have to stop and catch my breath at the % mark up in profit for ordinary parts.
Looking at the motor mounts and comparing them to similar industrial products for vibration reduction I would say cost +100% mark up for profit would generously be $250.00
I was looking at a replacement wiper relay on Ricambi it was listed at $51.00 . The average 30 amp auto relay runs $6-10 bucks so I found an alternate for under $10 but that's not why I almost choked ,on the same page it listed the 5 amp mini fuse (pack of 5 anywhere else 2.79) at $8.99 each!
So over 600% mark up on b.s. stuff is not a bad business model!

We chose these supermodels and with beauty often comes baggage -but I would love an aftermarket list of replacement parts for the 430 and would smile at 250% mark up!

This is why whenever we FChat folks find a good alternate part or service at a reasonable price we need to share it around!

Bob, The clicking is probably the lower front shock bolt. It must be very tight to handle the high loads of the spring and shock compression. I also recommend checking the tightness of the sway bar end mounting bolts. The first was the problem on my Scuderia the second was the problem on my Stradale. Like you I hate the clicking sounds.

    Joe,
I'm going to give your 2 ideas a shot today because after everything I did yesterday(see my thread going after front end noise) I still have the noise.
    Thanks,
    Bob
