    Get a screwdriver on either side and compress the float synchro as much as you can, get a helper to stick a feeler gauge in there, I cannot recall exactly the minimum size to be within spec, but KNOW THIS:

    the cone on the gear itself wears quite a bit too, meaning even if you put a new synchro over it, the cone itself is still worn meaning the service life of that new synchro won't be as long. Replacing the gear itself with the cone can be difficult and hugely pricey because they are quite scarce, you can go ahead and replace the synchro alone though and probably be ok for a while, I ended up doing just that because I simply could not locate new gears and cones. Works fine

    nothing like the beauty of the innards of a gearbox. The teeth that are visible dont look chewed up either.
