Well done. Is it me or I find that Gooding has had a hard time getting good cars this year (I actually find this a problem with all the auction houses). Besides the NART spyder there is really nothing truly exceptional being offered. No 250 SWB. No Cal spider. No 250 TR. I think the really great stuff is being exchanged privately (apparantly a 250 GTO sold for $53m by private treaty).

With prices so strong I would have expected the 'smart money' to be selling their cars and we would have a dream line up of cars.

Perhaps we have a sellers strike? Owners not wanted to let go for the fear of never finding a good car in the future.

Disagree. Edmond, you don't have all the information yet. Just be a bit more Patient, please.
Still more than 4 weeks to go. Bonhams, for example, just last night finally gave the ok to print the auction catalogue. And the RM catalogues will be sent out around the 2nd of August or thereafter.

A 14 louvres TDF with race incl MM history is for me a more significant and certainly rarer car than a comp SWB. The last one sold at auction by RM had no race history at all, and the private sales of the last 2 ( not double counting the RM which was sold to the trade,)were rumored to be important sales, ie in the 8 figures.

Just a few side notes here: A steel bodied 250 SWB Berlinetta sold a few days ago privately for US$ 6'975'000. It was factory certified.

And the owner of one of the very best 1961 SEFAC "Hot Rod" 250 SWB Alloy Berlinettas just turned down a private offer of US$ 15 Million. He doesn't need the money anyway and what else could he then buy?

Thanks for letting us know, Marcel. How much are 250LM's now fetching or their owners turning down for them?

A standard (non-14 louver) 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta with a good and long period race history sold two weeks ago in Europe for GB Pounds £ 3'250'000 from one private owner to a private buyer in the UK.

Bonhams, One of 3 LeMans Blower Bentleys, in same family ~50 years = pretty special IMHO

The Birkin Bentley (private customer special) got ~$8M so one would think this will be big...

    Marcel,
Are you expecting there to be a larger number of significant cars coming to auction in Monterey, this year, compared to past, due to the run-up in prices?

    Marcel,

"1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale Berlinetta" at Bonham's Quail Lodge auction is my Dad's old car (0313EU), yes? How did it become a "1953"? Paperwork from when Dad bought it in April 1958 lists it as a 1954. Perhaps the auction listing is just a typo. Will it be shown at FCA National-Road America and/or Pebble Beach before the auction?

Regarding your statement, "And the owner of one of the very best 1961 SEFAC "Hot Rod" 250 SWB Alloy Berlinettas just turned down a private offer of US$ 15 Million." - that wouldn't be 2733GT, would it? Probably not, but I'm really curious as to where in the "very best" pecking order 2733 would fall.

    Thanks very much.

    George P.

The auction listing is NOT a typo. Once again, 0313 EU is a 1953, not a 1954. No matter what some U.S. title may say or not. We have been thru this before already. In USA, but not in other countries, cars built after August of the year automatically are considered next year's model, simply because of marketing and because the client naturally wants the "new year" model. The chassis of 0313 EU was completed on the 24th October 1953 already, the rear axle on the 20th November 1953, the gearbox on the 24th November 1953 and the engine on the 7th December 1953. 0313 EU is clearly a 1953 and certainly not a 1954.
No, 0313 EU will not be shown at the FCA Nationals at Elkhart Lake and also not at Pebble Beach on the 18th August 2013. This is something the next owner can do.

SWB: no, that wasn't 2733 GT.
