    Beautiful Reno
This is such a bittersweet thread - Ferrari is now making the best cars ever, but without a manual transmission I don't see the point. *Sigh*

Worse: I can go buy a new Porsche with a 7 speed...

What's next? Hyundai wins Le Mans?

My dear friend José Froilán Gonzalez, Ferrari's first F1 winner, dies aged 90

    Saturday, June 15th 2013, 12:56 GMT

Jose Froilan Gonzalez, the first man to win a world championship Formula 1 race for Ferrari, has died at the age of 90.

After racing in his native Argentina for several years, Gonzalez followed countryman Juan Manuel Fangio to European racing in 1950.

He retired from his first two F1 starts with a private Maserati, but was recruited as works Ferrari driver for 1951.

The Pampas Bull, as Gonzalez was nicknamed, duly became Ferrari's first F1 winner as he defeated Fangio's Alfa Romeo to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Ever-present on the podium in his remaining starts that year, Gonzalez finished the year third in the standings.

He switched to Maserati for the next two seasons, although his 1953 campaign was truncated by back injuries from a crash in a sportscar race in Lisbon.

Back at Ferrari for 1954, Gonzalez won the British GP for a second time, as well as a host of non-championship wins. He also triumphed alongside Maurice Trintignant in the Le Mans 24 Hours.

By the end of the year, Gonzalez had edged out Mike Hawthorn by a mere half a point to take second in the F1 championship behind Fangio.

That proved to be his final season at international level, as the then 32-year-old chose to return home to Argentina to focus on domestic racing.

Gonzalez continued to make sporadic F1 appearances until 1960, and added another podium finish with second behind Fangio in his home GP in 1955.

Gonzalez's death means Jack Brabham is now the oldest surviving F1 race-winner.

Dear Froilan and me in 1958:

Fritz, great and sincere regrets at the news of the passing yesterday of your friend and colleague Jose Froilan Gonzalez. RIP.

I too saw the above 458 Spider; it is indeed TdF blu/cuoio, the same paint and leather as my 575M. Fritz, I recall your commenting on all my cars being blue and saying you intended to have another white Ferrari to match your FF. Too bad your agent hasn't one but you will love the blu Pozzi, somewhat darker than the TdF blu cars but extremely elegant. Several years ago I was close to buying a 550 Maranello that had been owned by the President of Ferrari North America. It was blue everything! leather, carpets, dash, rear shelf, even the windows were tinted blue. I found it too somber.

What a great way to celebrate someone's life! It happens. We can be sad. But raising a glass in remembrance and sharing the person with those who did not know him... Class and respect.

Best thread on f-chat for so many reasons.

    Thank you.

I never knew this man. Still I shed a tear at his passing. Why? I don't know - my best guess is that his joy and love of life is was so obvious, and now he is gone forever.

    Best regards,

    Randy

Your car is beautiful Fritz, personally I prefer the lines of the F12 so am anxious to see yours when you get it. Just out of curiosity, have you had much to do with the Porsches aswell? Driving experiences? Did you buy your FF standard or was it built to your specs (e.g. own choices of interior color, trim, wheels etc?

My FF was build with my specs...

In 1957 I bought the Porsche Spider 1953 prototype that the old von Stuck brought to Brazil and left it there. I did win a few races with it. Here is a photo at Interlagosin 1957 before one of the races. You can see the Spider 9 that I painted in red after an accident in a previous race. It was very light and fast... And other very interesting Ferraris.

Thanks Fritz! Very kind of you.

Your help is very much appreciated. After so many years trying to get the dealer's approval to start the Club, our patience has ended. Everybody has it's limits, I guess.

We have the means, the people and the cars to move forward, and that's what we are doing right now, with or without official support. According to the owners, we have waited for too long already.

I would be fantastic to let Mr. Montezemolo know about that ...
