Why people wanted to make their Boxers look more like 308s is beyond me.

    Pass.

    I just can't see it.

I wonder if the beautiful quarter windows are still there. It could be put back with a bit of work.

Too bad there's a premium for this. Maybe there is someone who wants one though.

I'd be interested in knowing what kind of any structural stiifening was done to the chassis, to compensate for the roof removal, and how much weight if any was added.....Mark

    Good day All,

I always wondered about this too... By removing the roof and its underlying structure all of the stresses are now supported by the floor and vehicle frame alone. I wonder if anyone has pics of what additional "bracing" these firms did?

    Cheers,

    Sam

Why did they foul up the lovely window behind the B pillar?
    Reinforcements for the targa roof?

The only place they could add reinforcements is between the belly pan and the fiberglass floor because the inside rockers are stock according to the pics of the interior. There isnt much room below to add anything significant so its safe to say that if any was added at all it wouldnt do much. I guess they could run a small beam along the inside of the rockers but it wouldnt do much either. I would return it to stock, theres enough boxers out there that are being parted out that a roof wouldnt be hard to come by.

i bet there is no additional stiffening. please note: the boxer fram is solid like the rock !

boxers are not flexible flyers...serious frame under that gorgeous body work!

newman, please chime in on the boxer frame...your thoughts?

It looks way better with the modified B-pillar.. There are a few that are just chopped with the quarter window left stock and it looks wrong. This car is awesome.

Its the same setup in the middle as a 308 but different dimensions. Losing the roof would allow flex probably worse than a 308GTS due to the lack of larger rockers like the factory open car. The 308's flex a lot in GTS form, its alarming how much the windshield frame moves. Ill admit its a nice looking car but what do you call it? An SB512? Structurally its compromised.

Newman, apologies for the hijack and going off topic for this particular targa car. Somebody said on here a little while back that the Boxer chassis is under engineered and I wondered what the facts are?

    I would do the same...

    New OEM Radio
    Welding rods
    Roof panel......
    Quarter windows

    So, it's worth $70K now.

I agree with Argento, it's a very nice car, interior and tools look great.

As with most vintage-y cars, modified Boxers seem to be worth less than a stock example.

Its pretty robust in my opinion but the example in this thread had its back bone cut out, so that robustness is gonzo. There were bone head moves when they made the frame that dictated the height of the engine in the chassis, header to ground clearance and rear ride height. Its a total goof up that could be undone if one didnt car about originality and wanted to improve the cars handling and center of gravity. The TR went back to the solid one piece frame rather than have the removable rear subframe for servicing so something in the concept is right with the boxer frame.

Does anyone know if there was ever a factory targa topped 512? I always thought no but I am being told there is a factory version?
