Long story, I used duct tape to attach some towels to my car as I serviced it recently. I should have used blue painter's tape on retrospect, but instead I used heavy gray duct tape.

It left a bit of residue in several areas on the car, and I'd like some advice on a safe manner to remove it. I tried a bit of Goo Gone on a hidden area, and it removed a bit of red as well, so that's out!

Any pros out there have any suggestions?

Regular varsol paint thinner should work, and not affect most auto paints, but will remove any wax. Sometimes a bit of colour is coming off with the wax being removed if the wax used a cleaner wax formulation, so a very, very small colour on the cloth might be ok. Could try mothers detailing spray, with a microfibre cloth as well depending how much glue residue you have.

Mineral Spirits will also clean the adhesive without damage to the paint.

Try a silicone spray lube. Used it at the dealer when people would tape their windows up. Never had any issues. Or the above and rewax the car either way.

Did you use "Goo Gone" or "Goof Off"? I've never seen Goo Gone harm anything. On the other hand, Goof Off is tricky to work with, because it will dissolve things you don't want it to.

I've used engine degreaser to remove stuff like that. In the UK products like Gunk or Jizer work fine. Don't know if they're available in the U.S.

3M makes a specific Vehicle Adhesive Remover. It's the best.

Although, yes, you did use a far stronger adhesive tape than necessary.

WD40 could work as well as using more duct tape and quick pulls to remove the glue.

IMO, I wouldn't use more duct tape.

I agree with smiles about the 3 m product.
The problem with wd40 is that it can be absorbed into paint and that ain't good.

Yep it was Goof Off I used, not Goo Gone. I'll try the above tips with the exception of WD40, and report back today..
    Thnx
