RIP, he's done so much for the automotive world. God Speed. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/12/sports/carroll-shelby-builder-of-cobra-sports-car-dies-at-89.html
Any truth to this? http://jalopnik.com/5909688/the-probably-true-story-of-how-carroll-shelby-really-died?utm_campaign=socialflow_jalopnik_facebook&utm_source=jalopnik_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow

lee holman has told me so many stories of shelby over the years...i felt i knew him. lot's of snake oil sold too. but at the end of the day, a true racing legend and an american hero. r.i.p. this is a sad day for all lovers of cars and racing. pcb
as a forum sad note: this belonged in the the general ferrari section and should NOT have been moved or hidden in the american muscle section. shel had enough ferrari racing history to have qualified him for a bit more respect imho.
he raced for ferrari, aston martin, and is the only person to win lemans as a driver[aston]-manager[ford gt]-owner[cobra]
Just like his cars, I think he extracted every bit of horsepower out of his body. Well done, my friend, well done. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I definitely agree that this should not have been moved. Check out this little red car he drove with astounding results. Carroll signed the car at Amelia back in 2010. Much to the owner's delight, he was a bit more wordy then the average autograph. regards ken Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
thank you for agreeing with me ken. i see that threads about the passing of this true legend were removed from general, vintage and other racing...all of which he rightly belonged. i really don't understand who thought he belonged hidden down in american muscle? i actually see that as quite disrespectful. maybe i am being over sensitive. pcb
....like putting Joe DiMaggio in with Marylin Monroe...exclusively. There is so much more than the "American Muscle" aspect to this great driver, car builder and man. I think FChat' s move of his passing is totally missing the big picture on the impact he had on motorsport in general.
I agree. That's why I put the news in "other racing". He's far too revered to be swept under this miniscule carpet.
RIP not only his family and friends but the auto world lost a great man who had his hand in so many things auto related Everyone knows his connections with the Cobra...the Ford GT and the Mustangs but he came to the dark side for awhile and helped design the Viper. His name and expertise also grace my Dodge Daytona Shelby Z and many of the other turbocharged cars...they packed a punch and were quite powerful in their day. I am thankful that Mr Shelby loved speed and power and built so many crazy cool fast cars !!
A Legend and an Automotive Icon, one of his creations: http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5855.jpg http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5922.jpg http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5920.jpg http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5852.jpg http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5854.jpg http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/arezzo66666/DSCF5921.jpg S

I find it amazing that Americans are finding it challenging that Carroll's passing is being discussed in American Muscle. Yes Carroll drove many other cars and had many successes but his biggest success IMO was taking American technology on to the world motorsport stage and making it a winner. So RIP Carroll Shelby and great effort with that American muscle. Pete ps: I'm confused by the 250GTO photos in this thread, did Carroll drive the GTO as well?
'I'm confused by the 250GTO photos in this thread, did Carroll drive the GTO as well?' A great play on words. Reference the Hx of international auto racing from the mid-fifties to the seventies.
