Hello Gentlemen - quick question to those resident in Italy. Do the speed control warning signs in Italy mean there's always a camera, or there might be a camera (e.g. random road patrols will have to be preceded by a fixed warning sign)?

    :)

    EDIT
Also -anyone know where I can find info on car events in Italy? Currently in the Chianti region and have a feeling something was going on here, but can't find anything on it. In a short span of time I sam a Morgan, Fiat Ottovu (!!), something, Ferrari 348 heading in the same direction this afternoon.

The law states that a sign must be erected before a speed trap otherwise the fine is not valid, so anywhere you see a sign there *could* be a speed control.

In the (good) old days there was practically zero chance of a real speed check being there, but it's worth bearing in mind that Italy has completely changed approach to speeding over the last 4 or 5 years. In some areas there is almost zero tolerance both to speeding and drink driving. The reasons for this shift in attitude are several and various, but primarily Italy was "commanded" by the EU to reduce the death toll per km or face heavy sanctions. Coupled with the economic crisis this has triggered the proliferation of speed controls as local authorities and central government raise tremendous revenue from fines (including a few €'000 from me the last years) under the auspices of road safety.

For example, the road from Maranello to Serramazzoni, which is effectively a country road, now has 5 live speed camera sites. This was a road used by the factory test drivers to test prototypes, who now keep away, but the tourists keep coming, and it's a road that just invites you to spank it.

On top of this, there is an avrerage speed system installed called "Tutor" on the A1 between Milan and Bologna and then from Viterbo to Salerno. This system is extremely efficient and works day & night, rain or shine. Ask me how I know! On the A1 there is NO WAY TO SPEED without getting caught.

If you have a foreign car and if there is no fine sharing agreement between Italy and the country of registration then you have some margin to get away with a bit of speed, but if you exaggerate and get caught then the police have the option to confiscate your car and driving license.

Like in so many other things, Italy aint what it used to be.

Thanks for the reply - bit late, but maybe someone else will benefit ;) Tried to stick to the limits in most places, just to be safe. Petrol prices in Italy were high enough themselves to make this trip a bit more expensive than planned (and to keep the speed down), so fines weren't welcome. Three weeks since coming back and nothing in the post as of yet - fingers crossed ;)

Indeed Italy on the road was nothing as expected - Poland's madness in comparison. Luca was the only place that gave as a slight peek into the past of arguments, speeding, dodging and not yielding...

BTW You in Emilia Romagna? Hope you're well..
