Marc (blackwood), what lens do you use? Nice shallow depth of field. Nice eye.

^ I wish! I have Canon's weird 70-300 DO lens, but I want to sell it and pick up the 100-400. I may yet cancel my 5D mark III order in favor of a mark II and a nicer telephoto.

I was fairly close to the subjects in all those. They're all in captivity (excluding the goose).

The falcon and goose are @105mm (24-105 f/4 lens), and the eagle and secretary bird are @300mm (70-300 DO IS).

Ah yes, the "hidden L" is a great lens for the money!

It's nice for what it is, but I'd like an EF telephoto (the DO is EFS, ie incompatible with full frame bodies).

Edit: actually, I guess it is EF. In that case I'll probably keep it.

It's a great lens no doubt, but being unable to use a TC on it and still have autofocus (on anything less than a 1 series body) drives me nuts. I am somehow always juuuuust out of range for what I am shooting or can't get focused fast enough manually if I have the TC on. Been practicing my manual focus skills with it a bunch but decided to purchase a remedy as well. My 500mm (which will AF with the 1.4x TC for 700mm) and Wimberly Sidekick show up tomorrow. :)

Old 1-series body. The new one is 5.6 or faster.

The new one as in the 1 DX? It's not f/8 anymore? Wow. That's a big step backwards and makes their TC's much less useful with that body.

Correct, there are no f8 sensors on the 1dx AF unit. D4/D800 has f8 AF.

My inner cynic thinks they're driving people to buy new gla$$.

I've never used a max f8 combo, so it's not the end of the world, but I don't know how much I want to invest in a company that operates that way.

I've been standing around in my backyard for an hour and haven't seen a single bird, I even resorted to laying out some bread, but still no luck.

There are no birds here either

I have to go back to a couple of shots I took a few weeks ago. They weren't intented for the competition though.
