The more I hear about this new Mclaren, the more special I believe it will be. They are apparently ready to have a bloody knuckled legal fight regarding the legality of their new car. I have to wonder if they are up to something like a new suspension gizmo like Mercedes as well.

Sounds like Whitmarsh spent more time with lawyers than engineers.

It's possible, although the name of the game according to them may have changed as well. They see Red Bull's rule bending bendi-wing as being the way of the future once again. It's not cheating unless Charles says it is regardless of what appears to be happening, right? That being said, they think they have something that will be questioned by perhaps everyone and are ready to fight for it like the DDD, bendi wing, and the list goes one. If you're not sort of cheating or are not 'within the spirit of the rules' you're not trying hard enough right?

Personaly I like too see things like this as the engineers have been brideled for way too long and I'm happy that McLaren is fighting its legalit. I wonder what it is though that they are fighting for?

I prefer the terminology of 'pushing the envelope' as it seems less shifty but thats just my outlook.

One never knows with the FIA....enclosed mass damper was ruled an aero device but the driver's knee operated F-duct wasn't....nothing wrong with pushing the rules, especially if the FIA are constantly changing them...

I'm hoping that Charlie forgets his Meds for a season as we might see some real innovation return to F1 just like the days of old.

you wanted innovation from the days of old-i gave you a sample lol...

Seriously, people forget that that car was very competitive in '76....and it didn't have a flexing wing, f duct, blown diffuser or a mercury filled suspension.

    here's another wild looking car:

I've said it before and I will say it again:

Charlie does not have the final say on what is legal and what is not!

It is the FIA and the race Stewards at each track who determine what is legal to race and what is not, not Charlie!

Charlies job is to advise the Teams and the FIA as to his opinion about the legality of designs and concepts put forward. He does this based on his interpretation of the rules and he has always stated that just because he views something as being within the rules doesn't guarantee that it will be deemed legal.

Don't believe Me?: In 1997 Charlie had told McLaren that in his opinion, their individually braked rear wheel system on the MP4/12 was within the rules and was therefore legal as he saw it but told them that the race Stewards at the circuits may see things differently.

In Australia, the first race of the season, the car passed scrutineering and was deemed legal to race.
However, after a protest from Ferrari, at the second race of the season in Brazil, the race Stewards deemed the system illegal and refused to pass the car with the system fitted.

McLaren argued that Charlie had said he thought it to be within the rules and therefore legal to which Charlie said that he did not have the final say on the matter.

The FIA reviewed the concept of the system and ruled that the primary function of the system was to steer the car by braking a single wheel at a time.
McLaren argued that it's primary function was to slow the car down and that the steering effect was a secondary function.
The FIA responded by stating that the primary system for slowing the car was the main, 4 wheel braking system and so therefore this single wheel braking was designed to turn the car and was therefore not legal, thus upholding the race Stewards decision.

Over the years there have been a number of concepts that Charlie has viewed as being within the rules only to be deemed illegal later on by the race Stewards and the FIA.

And then there have been some concepts that Charlie felt were not within the rules and therefore illegal, but the Stewards and FIA have held the opposite view and allowed them to race.

As I said earlier on, Charlie merely gives his opinion based on his interpretation of the rules as to the legality of the designs and concepts. He does not have the final say!

Well, whoever it is, i just hope they take the fight to the Bulls, and not let them walk away with the title. If Fred/Massa/Schumacher doesn't end up being a WDC, i certainly hope Button does.

+1. Id like to see a JB WDC if its not a Ferrari driver. Whitmarsh continues to come to LH's aid/defense in the press. Big article again in the press this week about how great LH is and how he is a member of the Mclaren family etc. Whitmarsh doesnt have to waste his time doing that for Jb!

If JB wins a WDC, I think the LH fallout will be interesting given his entertainment oriented management. If LH is not close to winning it and JB does, I think you set the stage for LH to leave.

apart from that I wouldn't mind seeing Vettel win another one, if a Mclaren driver has to win the WDC I certainly hope it's Button. Hamilton will surely melt down.

Maybe, he then records a sad song, perhaps with Elton John going in the background ''It's a sad, sad situation...''

    :D

Well the launch is in 30 minutes. So far the big news is that there are McLaren branded cookies (http://t.co/vAQuXer7) and a guy from German tv has turned up wearing pink, black and white harlequin trousers, which potentially contravenes the McLaren strict dress code!

I hope many more teams use a normal looking nose instead of the Caterham platypuss thing.
